Andrea Hart is a senior Journalism and Latin American studies major at Northwestern who recently covered on immigration issues in South Africa for five months. She reported on legislative issues
concerning refugee rights and wrote analytical pieces on the underlying
societal tensions surrounding xenophobia. Her work on immigration
issues culminated in a two-week trip to the South Africa-Zimbabwe border
investigating issues concerning migrant abuse, healthcare and the lives
of unaccompanied migrant children. Her work was recently nominated for a Hearst Journalism Award. Previous experience includes cultural reporting for Chicago magazines and co-founding Northwestern's only alt-weekly magazine, The Weekly.
She intends on returning to South Africa on an international reporting grant for two weeks in March 2008 to cover the country's election. While in DC she hopes to cover Latino issues, economic reform and youth political activism. She plans pursue a career as a regional correspondent in Latin America after graduation.
