Treating a nation: PTSD in the United States

PTSD is a very real disorder, affecting veterans of all ages, from teenagers back from Iraq to elderly veterans who served on the front lines during World War II. So how has the VA changed how it is treating PTSD?

PTSD at a glance

 Dr. Eric Proescher is an outreach psychologist for veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. He currently works at the Jesse Brown VA Hospital in Chicago, which has treated more than 5,000 OIF/OEF veterans. Proescher is a Navy veteran, having served from 2001 to 2006. Here is describes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, current treatment of PTSD, and the issues facing veterans today.

Two faces of PTSD

Gary Mason, 56, is a Vietnam War veteran, and Emanual, 24, is a veteran of the war in Iraq. Both are battling the nightmares and horrific images left from combat. They are currently members of outpatient PTSD and ATP (drug and alcohol) treatment programs at the Jesse Brown VA Hospital in Chicago. Here they discuss their experiences with PTSD and treatment through the Department of Veterans Affairs.
