The Cook County state's attorney's office prosecutes criminal cases. The office is the second largest of its kind in the United States, employing 850 lawyers and prosecuting 30,000 felony cases annually.
As the election approaches, the three candidates have been increasingly slinging insults at one another. Accusations mainly center around ethics and experience. Republican candidate Tony Peraica and Democratic candidate Anita Alvarez have exchanged jabs over political fundraising, especially. Also, at a recent debate, Peraica accused Green Party candidate Thomas O'Brien of being planted as a decoy candidate by the Democratic Party.
