In honor of the centennial of Chicago author Nelson Algren's birth this month, take a virtual walk through some of Algren's favorite fictional and real neighborhood spots in Chicago with this interactive Google map.

For most of his life, Algren called the Northwest side neighborhood of Wicker Park home. The author of “The Man with the Golden Arm,” “Chicago: City on the Make,” “A Walk on the Wild Side,” and numerous other works, explored all of his adopted city’s gritty side with clarity and passion. He was born in Detroit on March 28, 1909, and died in Sag Harbor, N.Y., May 9, 1981.

Blue placemarkers signify locations featured in Algren's work.
Red placemarkers, glasses and houses signify locations that were significant in Algren's life.

All location information was provided by the historical association dedicated to the author, The Algren Committee.
