Anti-abortion and abortion rights activists held vigils at the Albany Surgical Medical Center on North Elston during the last weekend of a 40 Days for Life and 40 Days for Choice campaign. Participants said similar vigils will continue even after a city-wide buffer zone ordinance takes effect Nov. 17. The ordinance mandates that activists within a 50-foot zone around medical facilities must stay at least eight feet away from anyone trying to enter the facility. Anti-abortion advocates said the ordinance will not deter them from handing out leaflets and trying to talk to women who plan to receive abortions.
