Illinois Lottery spokesman Tracy Owens discusses what the lottery does for schools throughout the state.

On Thursday, parents, community organizers and a Chicago radio DJ brightened the rooms at Michelle Obama’s childhood alma mater.

Amid public criticism about closings and violence in Chicago Public Schools, the Illinois State Lottery’s Raise a Hand initiative teamed with not-for-profit Chicago Cares to paint three classrooms at Bouchet Elementary.

Painting and repairing damage will be done at eight public schools this year, Illinois Lottery spokesman Tracy Owens said.

Bouchet is the second school to get a visit from Raise a Hand Illinois, and representatives from Clear Channel radio station WGCI were there to help out.
