Violet Berlin and Savi Smith, both age 7, tower over a model of downtown Chicago, on display at the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The stereolithography model uses a technique where a computer prints imagery in three dimensions by layering liquid resin that is hardened by lasers.

Rebar, concrete and steel transformed their way from the building blocks of skyscrapers into the foundations of engineering education on Sunday at the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

The not-for-profit organization hosted a hands-on engineering fest to encourage kids and families to think about what goes on to build their environments.

It all marked the kick-off of National Engineers Week. Families can continue the fun with a free engineering exhibit at the Illinois Institute of Technology next Sunday.

Additional Engineers Week events can be found at www.chicagolandweek.org, and more information on the Chicago Architecture Foundation is available at www.caf.architecture.org.
