Crews performing routine maintenance on a railroad lift-bridge on Chicago's South Side discovered a damaged shaft inside one of the wheels used to lift the more than 2 million pound bridge.
The U.S. Coast Guard afforded Norfolk Southern Corp., the operator of the bridge, a window of 112 hours to make the repairs.
Because the work will impede shipping traffic and divert train traffic, Illinois Constructors Corp., based in Elgin, will work around the clock to complete the work for Norfolk Southern.
