Black teens say Hollywood misses the mark with stereotypes

Chicago black teens have had enough with the stereotypes portrayed in Hollywood.

Hollywood tends to repeat and reinforce stereotypical roles of black America, such as the gang member, con artist, mammie or welfare mother. While motion pictures, such as “The Help,” which portrays black women stereotypically as maids, have won Academy Awards, teens and experts alike say today’s youth prefer to watch films that portray black people in more powerful and positive roles.
