Some East Lakeview residents are embracing a controversial Walmart that opened in the affluent neighborhood last week, just one mile away from another Walmart store.
Opponents protested plans to build the new 30,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market store two years ago, fearing that it would hurt small businesses and increase traffic on North Broadway Street.
But now one longtime Lakeview resident who was part of the opposition said the store is nicer than she expected.
“I went in there yesterday and checked it out, and they had some really good prices and deals there," said Loretta Trujillo. "This neighborhood is different. People have lived here for many years, and the grocery stores—our neighborhood grocery stores—will be hurt by it. There's no two ways about it.”
Walmart's prices on brand-name items are tough competition for smaller grocery chains.
For example, a 14-ounce box of Cheerios is $2.98 at Walmart. The same box of cereal at a Jewel is $3.67 – 69 cents more. A 16-ounce bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing is $2.98 at Walmart. It's $3.49 at Jewel.
The new store's inexpensive food is appealing to some Lakeview workers.
“I'm actually happy because I can go down and get something for cheaper than going to the restaurants like this restaurant and the ones up the street," said Donielle Parham, a local employee.
The new store created about 120 new jobs and is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m seven days a week.
