Like many cities, Chicago has financial problems. CPS says closing this school along with 53 other schools will save the city hundreds of millions of dollars — money that can be used to improve schools that remain open. But critics say the closures have been hastily planned and could put students at risk.
Elizabeth Peabody Elementary School on Chicago’s West Side is on the chopping block. Ninety-five percent of the students are low income; 76 percent are Latino.
