Want to play hockey despite the subzero winter? A small group has you covered.
That is, if you can swim.
Meet the Chicago Underwater Hockey Club, a handful of athletes who play the sport twice a week at indoor pools at Northeastern Illinois and Chicago State universities. They don snorkels, flippers and masks to play full games of hockey underwater.
It’s a complete cardio exercise in addition to the thrill of making underwater goals.
The club doesn't lock you into a strict commitment. Members can choose to come and go to practices at their leisure. But many members do travel to national competitions in places such as California and Minnesota.
The club holds practices Tuesday nights at Northeastern Illinois and Saturday mornings at Chicago State. All practices are open to newcomers, and those interested can get in contact with members via its Facebook group and webpage.
