A day of fancy fashion and beauty this Friday promises to increase inner health and beauty in women.

To promote awareness among women about the risks of heart disease, The Heart Truth campaign established National Wear Red Day, which is the first Friday in February. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, claiming more women's lives in 2002 than breast cancer, stroke or lung cancer.

This Friday, three Chicago area spas will offer complimentary services from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to spread the word about heart disease. Samone Spa Bar in the West Loop will serve up free Red Apple Manicures, which includes a coat of red nail polish and a hand soak in Warm Spirit's Red body wash.  Clients also can soak their cuticles in fresh-cut Pretty Lady Apples - the real fruit.

Other spas participating include The Woodhouse Day Spa in Algonquin and Dermatique Laser and Skin in Geneva.  Interested spa-goers must make reservations in advance. For more information about spa services and locations, visit www.chicagobeauty.com/heart.

The Heart Truth campaign is an ongoing effort by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The campaign encourages women to wear red clothing, makeup or accessories this Friday. The campaign is hosting its fifth designer fashion show of red dresses Friday during the annual New York Fashion Week. See the Heart Truth Web site at www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/hearttruth/
