WASHINGTON -- At 11 p.m., networks projected Barack Obama would win the presidential election over John McCain to become the 44th president of the U.S. Immediately across Washington, people took to the streets to celebrate the historic moment.

The dancing, singing, chanting, hugging and crying continued until well past 3 a.m. in the Capital with no one wanting to leave and miss seeing something they may not forget for the rest of their lives.

Meanwhile in Chicago, Obama spoke with great passion and solemnity about the road forward for the country, invoking tears from a crowd of thousands who flocked to Grant Park to witness the event.
