Happy Gilmore . . . is a Republican?

WASHINGTON -- Chuck Norris doesn’t donate to political campaigns; political campaigns donate to Chuck Norris.

And another: “Chuck Norris doesn’t endorse [candidates]; he tells America how it’s gonna be.” –Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Actually, Chuck Norris did donate to a political campaign, and he did endorse a presidential candidate:   Mike Huckabee, to be as precise as one of Norris’ notorious roundhouse kicks to the face.

Norris likes to paint himself as an unlikely hero. His 2004 autobiography titled “Against All Odds: My Story,” told the story of his rise out of an impoverished childhood into his present status as an internationally known celebrity and inflictor of pain.

But Norris’ biggest opposition may be found among his colleagues in Hollywood.

According to a Medill analysis of Federal Election Commission records on donations to the 2008 presidential candidates, 91.5 percent of all donations by those indentifying themselves as actors, producers and others involved in entertainment industry were to Democratic candidates for president. Only 8.5 percent of political donations went to Republicans, based on records analyzed by Medill.

Norris does have some Republican backup. Clint Eastwood, Gary Sinise, Ben Stein and Tom Selleck all donated to John McCain’s campaign. Kelsey Grammer and Adam Sandler donated to Rudy Giuliani. Pat Sajak donated to Fred Thompson and Drew Carey gave to Ron Paul’s campaign.

Apparently, hosting a game show makes one disproportionately likely to vote Republican. Must be all that income tax on prize earnings.

Of course there are also notable actors turned Republican politicians in Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Fred Thompson, the former senator from Tennessee..

Chuck Norris frequently invoked his persona on the campaign trail, appearing with Huckabee on campaign stops and political ads –because nothing says “I’m ready to be leader of the free world” quite like the sight of the former governor of Arkansas deadpanning a “Chuck Norris Fact.”

Medill News Services attempted to reach Mr. Norris for comment on his political activity but he did not return Medill’s phone calls.

Chuck Norris does not return phone calls. Phone calls return Chuck Norris.
