Weekend meetings here almost feel like home as people share experiences in their native language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Qazaq Center Chicago\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/800003964?h=be97916eed&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"639\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daulet Orynbayev, 34, came to the United States in 2018 as a tourist. In New York, he had the idea to open a cultural center for the Kazakh community. (Almagul Serikbayeva\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I moved to Chicago for work, the thought of the center came back to me,\u201d he said. \u201cMany here wanted it to be open, but nobody wanted to be responsible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, Orynbayev\u2019s father died. It was difficult for him to find an imam, someone who leads prayer in a mosque. (Almagul Serikbayeva\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s a Kazakh proverb that says, \u201cTilsiz ult bolmaidy,\u201d which translates as no nationality can exist without knowing its native language. For some of them, it\u2019s also like having a big family, he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Qazaq Center officially opened in September last year. According to Orynbayev, around 100 Kazakh families are residing in Chicago.
