A hot dog dressed in mustard, pickles, green relish, onions, sliced tomatoes and celery salt can be called &#8220;dragged through the garden,&#8221;\u00a0but where can vegetarian and vegan\u00a0Chicagoans find a\u00a0meatless\u00a0dog to take part in the\u00a0tradition? Watch how five hot dog restaurants make their vegan spin on the classic Chicago-style hot dog.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Vegan Chicago hot dogs\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/823374468?h=346f4f07a4&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>TRANSCRIPT:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: The Chicago-style hot dog. It&#8217;s all about the toppings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHARLIE O\u2019CONNELL, Devil Dawgs director of operations: It\u2019s those famous toppings, the seven toppings that you have to have on a real Chicago hot dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">VARIOUS: The mustard, the bright green relish, the onions, tomato, the pickle, the sport peppers and the celery salt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: There\u2019s one other rule:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GREGORY GIARRATANO, Flub a Dub Chub general manager: You do not put ketchup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: Some Chicago restaurants put a meatless spin on the Chicago dog, swapping the Vienna beef for a veggie dog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JULIA LOWE: I\u2019m riding the L train all over the city\u2019s North Side on the hunt for the best vegetarian versions of the classic Chicago dog. And my first stop is the Original Chicago\u2019s Doghouse on Fullerton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AARON WOLFSON, Chicago\u2019s Doghouse owner: We saw a demand for clientele coming in wanting a vegetarian or vegan hot dog, and we didn\u2019t want to turn them away, so we introduced that onto our menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JOHN VOLK: It is the quintessential Chicago-style hot dog, vegan. Taste, I\u2019m gonna give it a 3.75. Might have gotten a little too much char on the dog itself, but otherwise, so fresh, so perfect. Great atmosphere in here, friendly staff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[laughing]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WOLFSON: If you\u2019re a vegetarian or vegan, and you have a craving for a veggie hot dog, stop on by.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[music]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LOWE: My next stop is Flub a Dub Chub\u2019s on Broadway. I\u2019m here with my friend Rachel who\u2019s going to try their vegan dog, The Willie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GIARRATANO: We want it to be a great experience. We want you to taste every flavor. We don\u2019t skip on anything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: The Willie has a twist: a cucumber slice. The family-owned business is a Lakeview staple with some loyal fans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">GIARRATANO: \u200b\u200bIt\u2019s basically hot dog bartending, because you get to know everyone in the neighborhood. I\u2019ve got a couple that comes in from Elgin on Fridays. This is their place to get a veggie dog. So that\u2019s like an hour away. We have another couple from Indiana that drives in on the weekends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RACHEL BLOME: It\u2019s a super cute little diner, the staff was super friendly, the food came out really quick and hot and great, so yeah, absolutely, I would definitely recommend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[music]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LOWE: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My next stop is Portillo\u2019s. You can\u2019t talk about the Chicago dog without mentioning this place. Last year, they added the Garden Dog to their menu, which I will be trying today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: It\u2019s prepared the same way as the original: chargrilled and \u201cdragged through the garden.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LOWE: All right, now it\u2019s my turn to try the Portillo\u2019s Garden Dog. Overall Chicago experience, I mean come on, look at this place. Absolutely 4 out of 4 stars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[music]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LOWE: All right, it\u2019s a new day, I\u2019m hungry again, I\u2019m ready for some hot dogs, and I\u2019m here under the Belmont stop at Devil Dawgs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O\u2019CONNELL: Devil Dawgs is an institution at this point in Chicago. It\u2019s been around for 12+ years at this point. A lot of our employees have been with us since the beginning. We\u2019ve created a sort of family institution as far as employees go, which is beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: Devil Dawgs has four locations across Chicago and a fifth coming to Evanston this summer. And they\u2019re proud of their celebrity status.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">O\u2019CONNELL: Jessica Chastain, who just won the SAG award, tagged us, and she was eating one of our vegan Chicago dogs, which is super fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BLOME: For taste, I would give 4 out of 4 stars, I really, really enjoyed this. The vibes in here are super cute, I really love the atmosphere and the employees are awesome, so yeah, 4 out of 4.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[music]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LOWE: My journey ends here at a neighborhood spot \u2013 Cubs neighborhood, that is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: Wrigleyville Dogs recently added a new vegan hot dog from Uptons to their menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BOBBY SDRALIS, Wrigleyville Dogs general manager: We have a certain clientele that has been begging for a vegan dog, and really there has been. We\u2019ve identified it, we knew there was a thing, we knew there was a need, but there wasn\u2019t a good vegan dog out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">JORDANA COMITER: Yeah, so I\u2019m not vegan, so I was kinda scared to try the vegan one. I love hot dogs. I\u2019m a hot dog enthusiast. But it\u2019s not bad, like I\u2019m pleasantly surprised. And the ambiance here, (*chef kiss*), and the staff, incredible, the vibes are good, the buns were good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[music]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NARRATION: If there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve learned from this adventure, it\u2019s that no matter where you go for a vegan Chicago dog, you\u2019re sure to have a great experience.
