When Ethel Payne was a student at Lindblom High School in West Englewood nearly a century ago, she published exactly one article for her school\u2019s newspaper. But, according to biographer James McGrath Morris, Payne was never allowed on the newspaper\u2019s staff.<\/p>\n

As a black student during a time when Chicago was deeply segregated, Payne was prohibited from regularly writing articles for the student newspaper. Years later, Payne would become a pioneering journalist of the civil rights era. She reported for the Chicago Defender and earned a title as the \u201cFirst Lady of the Black Press.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thursday evening, her alma mater, Lindblom Math and Science Academy<\/a>, will dedicate its new journalism classroom to Payne, who attended the school from 1926 to 1930. The dedication is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Lindblom\u2019s Keeler Hall, located at 6130 S. Wolcott Ave., followed by James McGrath Morris\u2019 reading from his new biography about Payne at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want her to be a model for our students,\u201d said Alan Mather, Lindblom\u2019s principal. \u201cWhat she had to overcome to get to where she was, we felt it was a great message for our own students every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Mather, Lindblom\u2019s engineering and journalism students have joined forces to usher the school\u2019s journalism program into a new digital era. In the 2015-2016 school year, the school will use the new journalism space, designed by its engineering students, which will include a multimedia center and a green room.<\/p>\n

\n

Morris examines Payne’s untold story<\/h1>\n

James McGrath Morris is an author, columnist and radio talk show host who lives in Tesuque, New Mexico. \u201cEye on the Struggle\u201d is his fourth book; he has also written about correctional journalism, Charles E. Chapin and Joseph Pulitzer. Morris said he chose to write about Ethel Payne when he was searching for a topic for his next biography and noticed her name on a list of important journalists. <\/p>\n

After researching Payne, Morris said he was surprised to find that no one had written the story her life. \u201cWhen I looked at her life, I thought \u2026\u2018This is a great story,\u2019\u201d Morris said. \u201cIt also turned out to be a historically important story.\u201d Morris said he had three purposes for the book: to chronicle Payne\u2019s journey from the South Side of Chicago to the height of journalism, to show readers how the civil rights struggle looked through her eyes and to bring attention to the African American press, a part of journalism history Morris said he believes is all too often ignored. <\/p>\n

To spread the word about \u201cEye on the Struggle,\u201d Morris has spent this week in Chicago and interviewed with media outlets such as \u201cChicago Tonight\u201d and WBEZ. Morris is currently working on his next book, set to be published by Da Capo Press in 2017, entitled \u201cThe Ambulance Drivers: Hemingway and Dos Passos: Literary Lives in War and Peace.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n

Mather first heard about Payne from Morris, who contacted the school while conducting research for his new book, \u201cEye on the Struggle: Ethel Payne, the First Lady of the Black Press<\/a>.\u201d Morris plans to spend the day at Lindblom speaking with students on Thursday.<\/p>\n

According to Morris, Lindblom High School had a profound effect on Payne. At the time Payne attended the school, a majority of its students were white.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt prepared her for a life in which she would work in a white culture as an aggressive reporter,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n

Morris added that he hopes learning about Payne will inspire students at Lindblom to believe in their own abilities to create societal change.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of the reason we write stories like this is to empower people,\u201d Morris said. \u201cWriting about Ethel Payne and others\u2026is a reminder that these movements are made by everyday people, very often kids just in high school\u2026I\u2019m hoping that some student at Lindblom might say, \u2018Gee, this is also possible for me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Sam Dudek, who has taught journalism at Lindblom for seven years, said he hopes the space, dedicated in Payne\u2019s honor, will help prepare his students for the demands of journalism in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the new room we\u2019re creating and the new technology, I\u2019m hoping we can explore better and newer facets of journalism from photography to video to television to online to multimedia,\u201d Dudek said.<\/p>\n

Principal Mather said he hopes people from Lindblom, Englewood and the greater Chicago education community will attend the dedication and book reading, which will include a welcome video recorded by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.<\/p>\n

Moving forward, Morris said he hopes Payne\u2019s story will remain an example for Lindblom\u2019s kids of journalism\u2019s ability to affect people\u2019s lives for the better.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I want students to get is that journalism isn\u2019t merely a matter of reporting the news,\u201d Morris said. \u201cJournalism is a change-maker\u2014that the power that the press has\u2026to illuminate injustices\u2014is one of its most important roles in a democracy. And Ethel Payne fulfilled that without in any way betraying the tenets of journalism.\u201d<\/p>\n
