Major Burns was born with a name built for big moments \u2014 even before he was born, his mom knew he needed a name fit for greatness.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy spirit was telling me, this child is going to need a name that\u2019s going to come through the loudspeakers, \u201d Choretta Burns said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, Burns is chasing those big moments.<\/span><\/p>\n

After four years as a starter at LSU, the safety is fighting for a Chicago Bears roster spot. Signing as an undrafted free agent, he entered rookie camp May 10th, embracing the task with humility and hunger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m back to square one,\u201d Burns said. \u201cSo I\u2019m just soaking it in \u2013 getting words from the vets. No ego and ready to work with my head down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite his circumstances, Burns was all smiles at Halas Hall, the team\u2019s training facility, Saturday, May 10, after the second day of drills.<\/span><\/p>\n

Part of a 10-player undrafted free agency class, Major will have to prove his value.\u00a0 But this isn\u2019t the first time he has adjusted roles. Before becoming a standout on defense, he was once a quarterback in high school \u2014\u00a0 just like former Texas quarterback Major Applewhite, who inspired his name.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHis junior year, I saw a lot of potential in him as a safety,\u201d Madison Prep coach Landry Williams said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t question the switch. That\u2019s the kind of player he is: team first, a leader, willing to play special teams, open to coaching. That\u2019s going to show up on the field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While Burns\u2019 aim has always been the NFL, his mindset is grounded in gratitude.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a dream of mine,\u201d Burns said. \u201cNot too many people get this opportunity, so every day I come here and give it my all. One of my friends from back home told me, I\u2019m living everybody\u2019s dream right now, so I take that to heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

His mom is proud of the player he\u2019s become, but even more proud of the man.<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns left LSU with a shot at the pros and, more importantly, he walked out of Baton Rouge with a sports administration diploma in hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHis goal was to be in the NFL, but made sure he got that diploma,\u201d Choretta Burns said. \u201cFor the young men in our family watching him, we have kids doing better in school because of him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Grounded in how he was raised, he was sent off with one last line of motherly love as he joined a new team.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI told him, \u2018You are that one percent,\u2019\u201d his mother said. \u201cAs he got older, coaches would say, \u2018Play for fun, only one percent of you are going to make it to the NFL.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Burns is one of eight safeties on the deep squad and is currently fourth string. If he hopes to make the final roster come fall, he will have to make the most impact on special teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He may be fighting for a Bear\u2019s roster spot, but to the ones watching back home \u2014 Major Burns has already made it.<\/span><\/p>\n
