{"id":106361,"date":"2026-02-07T23:14:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T05:14:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=106361"},"modified":"2026-02-11T16:00:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T22:00:17","slug":"super-bowl-legacy-transforms-san-francisco-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/super-bowl-legacy-transforms-san-francisco-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Bowl legacy transforms San Francisco school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By Bianca Bryant<br \/>\n<\/b><i>Medill Reports\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SAN FRANCISCO \u2013 NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stood at the entrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School this week, not to discuss labor relations, but to champion a &#8220;spectacular city on the rise.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Bay Area prepares to host Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Goodell and league officials are choosing to look beyond the stadium, shining light onto the local community. The league is emphasizing a \u201clegacy impact\u201d designed to ensure the presence of the NFL\u2019s championship game leaves behind more than just memories of touchdowns and celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is an extraordinary community,\u201d Goodell said. \u201cToday we celebrate the legacy of making sure that this game has a lasting impact. Having fields where kids can play and Sports for All is a great thing, and we are proud to be a part of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative at MLK Middle School serves as the centerpiece of this year\u2019s community outreach. Through a partnership among the NFL, GENYOUth and Lowe\u2019s, the school has been transformed. Changes include the installation of a new turf field, the restoration of the running track and basketball courts, and a full repainting of the campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Super Bowl LX&#039;s Local Impact - MLK Middle School\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1164137182?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Video by <strong>Brock Morgan<\/strong><em><br \/>\nMedill Reports<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the staff at the school, the changes go beyond aesthetics. They are about shifting the culture on campus and fostering a sense of ownership among the students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel like they\u2019re giving kids here more sense of belonging,\u201d school security officer Anthony Guardado said. \u201cSince the school is getting remodeled, they feel like the school is theirs to take care of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s awesome for our kids,\u201d school security officer and case worker John-Michael Williams said. \u201cOnce-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community. They\u2019re beautifying the school in partnership with Lowe\u2019s. That\u2019s pretty cool.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact is personal for security staffer Anthony Washington, who attended the school as a student and now coaches flag football there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeeing the turf field in the back and all those different areas, I feel like it\u2019s really exciting for the kids, for them to do good or just try to take care of the school,\u201d Washington said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyssa Jeske, a teacher at the school, noted the NFL\u2019s involvement provides unique motivation for students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s really important that the NFL\u2019s here because these kids are having some good role models coming in and representing,\u201d Jeske said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central to this community surge is GENYOUth, a national nonprofit founded by America\u2019s Dairy Farmers and the NFL. The organization works with all 32 NFL teams to increase access to healthy school meals and physical activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Marie Krautheim, CEO of GENYOUth, explained the nonprofit has provided grab-and- go breakfast carts to the school, ensuring students are nourished before they hit the new field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe NFL doesn\u2019t just swoop in and have a game and go home,\u201d Krautheim said. \u201cThey want to make sure they are leaving the community in a better place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The physical activity side of the equation is bolstered by the NFL FLAG-In-School program, which provides equipment and kits to physical education programs. According to Krautheim, the goal is to help students build confidence and thrive both in the classroom and in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaileen Janmohamed, president and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee, identified the school as the first Sports for All Hub to celebrate the Super Bowl LX\u2019s local footprint. (Bianca Bryant\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMajor sporting events can be a catalyst for meaningful community change,\u201d Janmohamed told a room of students. \u201cYou all represent the future of the Bay Area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MLK Middle School Principal Byron Gougoumis said the school, which prides itself on restorative practices and project-based learning, has seen a \u201ctremendous increase\u201d in the students\u2019 sense of belonging over the last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe school got repainted. &#8230; That is a very significant part of beautifying our school and bringing that sense of belonging,\u201d Gougoumis said. \u201cWhen parents come in, it\u2019s the first thing they see.
