Beginning in October 2024, Caleb Harbin\u00a0regularly stood onstage in front of an<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>eager audience, downed four shots of a liquor of his choice, and performed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the classical titan \u201cMacBeth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between \u201cdoths\u201d and \u201cthous,\u201d Harbin\u00a0created\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Shakespearian playground for four other actors, who perform the show sober, through<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>an abundance of improv and two\u00a0additional\u00a0drinking challenges. By the end of the show<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he would have downed at least two more shots and two more alcoholic beverages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s\u00a0eight standard drinks in a 90-minute period.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to \u201cDrunk Shakespeare,\u201d Harbin\u2019s first professional theater gig after<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>graduating from DePaul University with\u00a0a\u00a0master of\u00a0fine\u00a0arts\u00a0in\u00a0acting in 2024.\u00a0His<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>residency with the show\u00a0came to a close\u00a0in February after having devoted himself to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cgetting messed up\u201d about once a week for\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the name, \u201cDrunk Shakespeare\u201d\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0an inebriated\u00a0free-for-all.\u00a0The show is performed 10 times over six days\u00a0each\u00a0week.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0a lot of alcohol\u00a0to pour, so\u00a0house\u00a0management\u00a0commits\u00a0to\u00a0scheduling\u00a0actors\u00a0for\u00a0drunk shows\u00a0only\u00a0one\u00a0day\u00a0of\u00a0a given\u00a0week.\u00a0When scheduled,\u00a0actors are\u00a0Breathalyzed after each<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>curtain by house management to ensure\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0below the legal limit.\u00a0The<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>drunk actor can choose to take a free Uber home after the show\u00a0or to\u00a0be signed out by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a fellow actor who agrees to\u00a0be responsible for\u00a0them that night.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With alcohol embedded into the show\u2019s culture, partying is a ritual\u00a0among the\u00a0cast members. Harbin, now 26,\u00a0acknowledge<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0he drinks much more now with his castmates than he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>did before joining the show. He\u00a0described\u00a0a prompt lifestyle\u00a0shift:\u00a0\u201cThe first month I was<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>out\u00a0’til\u00a05 a.m. four\u00a0times in\u00a0a week, and I had never been out\u00a0’til\u00a05 before,\u201d Harbin said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cast members prepare their bodies for drunk shows like athletes on game day. In<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>addition to physical and vocal acting warm-ups, Harbin learned best practices to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>manage getting sloshed (stay away from protein shakes, they \u201cnuke\u201d or\u00a0eliminate\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>buzz), and how to mitigate hangovers (Morning Recovery drinks from 7-Eleven).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>do become a professional,\u201d Harbin said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately,\u00a0<\/span>Harbi<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>said he\u00a0believes his embrace of partying more accurately reflects how his confidence<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has grown. After discovering acting\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0high school,\u00a0he\u00a0initially struggled to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>accept\u00a0that\u00a0he wanted to be an artist. Harbin\u00a0felt pressure from his family to pursue a job with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>more stability, and\u00a0felt out of place at his\u00a0undergraduate institution, Azusa Pacific University<\/span>, a<\/span>\u00a0private,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>evangelical Christian school 45 minutes outside of Los Angeles.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Azusa Pacific, s<\/span>tudents attended<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>chapel three times a week and church on Sundays<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Unmarried students were punished<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>if\u00a0they were\u00a0caught having sex, queerness and abortion were\u00a0broadly\u00a0unaccepted, and alcohol \u2013 and its<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>consumption \u2013 were banned from campus and all university events, according\u00a0to Harbin\u00a0and the Azusa Pacific University Student Handbook.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harbin\u00a0<\/span>struggled with anxiet<\/span>y<\/span>\u00a0at the time,\u00a0\u201cI never really fit in there,\u201d he said<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cI don’t think<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that environment was very good for me or my mental health.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0it was\u00a0<\/span>an on-campus sermon about\u00a0<\/span>Jesus<\/span>\u00a0walking on\u00a0<\/span>water<\/span>\u00a0that\u00a0gave\u00a0<\/span>Harbin<\/span>\u00a0the courage to follow his calling.\u00a0\u201cJesus said, \u2018You have little faith. Why did you<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>doubt?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018That’s me,\u2019\u201d Harbin\u00a0<\/span>recalled<\/span>. \u201cI want to be acting and take that leap<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of faith, and I’m doubting.\u201d The epiphany inspired him to switch his major from education<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to acting shortly after.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While he acknowledges the irony in his journey from dry campus to professional drinker,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Harbin bristles at this framing. Religion\u00a0<\/span>no longer<\/span>\u00a0plays\u00a0a significant role in his life, but<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he did not end up in a job centered around drunkenness\u00a0<\/span>to rebel<\/span>\u00a0against<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>evangelical Christianity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0don’t\u00a0feel like\u00a0\u2018Drunk Shakes\u2019\u00a0is this\u00a0Rumspringa\u00a0for me, like the Christian boy is finally<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>out,\u201d Harbin said, referring to\u00a0the period\u00a0Amish youths\u2019\u00a0leave their\u00a0community\u00a0for\u00a0an\u00a0often-rowdy\u00a0excursion\u00a0into\u00a0the modern world. \u201cIt\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0feel like a big deal that\u00a0I’m\u00a0drinking. What feels like a big<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>deal is that we get to do a show where there’s so much freedom.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite \u201cDrunk Shakespeare\u2019s\u201d silly premise, Harbin takes it seriously. He credits acting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0helping him come into his\u00a0own\u00a0and\u00a0pays back the favor in professionalism.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>massive jump in my confidence and my ability to interact with the world socially,\u201d he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>said. \u201cActing gave me a big gift.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harbin\u2019s story passes through some of\u00a0humanity’s\u00a0most ancient traditions: religion,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>theater\u00a0and, yes, alcohol. In that sense, pairing shots with classical text resonates\u00a0and is treated as sacred.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actors take\u00a0<\/span>(the drunk show)<\/span>\u00a0really seriously because you get to be so free on stage<\/span>,\u201d Harbin said.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>That’s the thing I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>think is radical about this show. Not the fact that there’s alcohol, but what\u00a0they’re\u00a0doing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with it.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harbin\u2019s journey from anxious teenager to confident adult\u00a0has been fully realized<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through\u00a0\u2018Drunk Shakespeare.\u2019\u00a0While the show\u00a0<\/span>will continue its residency at the Lion Theatre through 2026\u00a0(the company recently debuted a new drunk version of \u2018Romeo and Juliet\u2019),<\/span>\u00a0Harbin is moving on.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0drinking\u00a0less and\u00a0tackling bigger<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>roles.\u00a0His\u00a0first\u00a0job in a\u00a0feature film\u00a0began shooting\u00a0in March,\u00a0but\u00a0the\u00a0lessons he<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>gathered\u00a0from his time at The Lion Theatre\u00a0will\u00a0linger\u00a0longer than\u00a0any\u00a0hangover.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
