BUILDINGS, EXHIBITS\u00a0AND PEOPLE FILLED THE PARK EACH DAY.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scott Cummings: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1893, this was the center of the world. This was the world capital for six months.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IF WE LOOK THROUGH NEWSPAPER ARCHIVES FROM THE FAIR, WE CAN SEE HOW THEY FELT. YOU COULD SEE THE WORLD IN MINIATURE AT THE FAIR, AND THAT IT WAS A WORTH A WHOLE YEAR\u2019S SCHOOLING FOR A CHILD TO ATTEND. THE SPIRIT OF CAPITALISM AND INNOVATION WAS ON FULL DISPLAY.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Peter Alter: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There was the\u00a0world\u2019s largest\u00a0ball of twine\u00a0there. The world\u2019s largest block of cheese was there. The zipper, you know that thing you have on your jacket or your pants or whatnot,\u00a0your gym bag,\u00a0also debuted\u00a0there,\u00a0I believe the hot dog,\u00a0Cracker\u00a0Jacks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">IT WAS A MUSEUM OF THE WORLD, AN EXHIBITION OF ARTS, CULTURE, SCIENCE\u00a0AND TECHNOLOGY, BACK IN AN ERA WHEN THE RAILROAD RULED AMERICA. THE FAIR\u2019S IMPACT WAS SO PROFOUND, IT\u2019S REPRESENTED BY THE SECOND STAR ON CHICAGO\u2019S FLAG\u00a0TODAY.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cummings: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We were\u00a0the western\u00a0cowtown, and this was the moment that the city really had arrived.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ALMOST ALL THE BUILDINGS WERE TEMPORARY, BUT THE PARK ITSELF REMAINS, INCLUDING OLMSTED\u2019S WOODED ISLAND RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Rogers: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When you look out across one of the lagoons and you&#8217;re sort of looking at the\u00a0graceful balustrades and the staircase up to\u00a0the museum,\u00a0you can&#8217;t help but think about what it might have looked like when there were dozens of similarly monumental buildings, all over the park<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">THE ORIGINAL FERRIS WHEEL WAS AT THE FAIR,\u00a0TODAY,\u00a0COMMOMEMORATED\u00a0BY THE SMALLER ONE ON NAVY PIER.\u00a0TWO ORIGINAL BUILDINGS REMAIN:\u00a0THE ART INSTITUTE DOWNTOWN\u00a0AND THE MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Voula Saridakis: <\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But\u00a0this building, because it was going to be built as the Palace of Fine Arts, they built it with this brick substructure,\u00a0and that made it pretty strong.\u00a0And solid.
