Imagine lush flowers filling a room, with elevated mini cakes, sandwiches and scones served on a silver three-tier tray, the aroma of tea filling the air,\u00a0all\u00a0served\u00a0on pristine, colorful\u00a0china.\u00a0Or\u00a0just picture the\u00a0scene\u00a0in the 2013 film \u201cThe Great Gatsby\u201d\u00a0when Daisy\u00a0goes to\u00a0Nick\u2019s home for tea\u00a0and\u00a0gets\u00a0a\u00a0surprise visit\u00a0from\u00a0her former love, Gatsby,\u00a0played by Leonardo DiCaprio.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Afternoon tea offers a tasty gift for your mom on Mother\u2019s Day, but also a memorable ritual that has endured for centuries among women.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

High-tea menus feature \u201csavories\u201d like pies and meats instead of \u201cdainty sandwiches,\u201d said Louise Woof, the archivist at<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>Fortnum & Mason<\/span><\/a>, the London department store\u00a0that holds two\u00a0Royal\u00a0Warrants as of 2024.\u00a0Royal Warrants are\u00a0granted\u00a0by the\u00a0reigning monarch\u00a0of the United Kingdom, recognizing royal patronage of a business or service, and\u00a0Fortnum & Mason is the\u00a0go-to grocery supplier\u00a0for\u00a0the royal family.\u00a0Its\u00a0first warrant was\u00a0issued by Queen Victoria in 1898 and the second by King Charles in 2024.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt goes back to the fact that high tea would have been more of a lower-class thing to do. The British sometimes call that kind of food\u00a05\u00a0o’clock tea.\u2019 Some people have tea rather than dinner.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bOriginally, British women hosted \u200bafternoon tea at home, but by the end of the 1800s and the early 1900s, tea houses became popular, Woof said. \u201cIt was a place for ladies to go unchaperoned,\u201d Woof said. \u201cIt’s very sort of female-friendly ritual.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn that era,\u00a0I think people\u00a0often associate\u00a0a certain kind\u00a0of cakes with Mother’s Day, because people would return to their childhood home around Mother’s Day and make cakes,\u201d Woof said. \u201cSo\u00a0I think cakes and Mother’s Day go quite well together.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bFor the traditional afternoon tea experience in Chicago, consider these three options.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Peninsula<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 25-year-old Peninsula serves afternoon tea in the hotel\u2019s restaurant called The Lobby,\u00a0featuring.\u00a0tall ceilings and floor-to-ceiling\u00a0windows. The live piano music adds to the luxury experience. The high-quality service and food make it worth the $150 per person, said Lauren Levin, a beauty,\u00a0wellness\u00a0and travel influencer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bThe seasonal tea experience begins in April. Although the hotel is hosting a Mother\u2019s Day brunch in place of tea, The Lobby is offering afternoon tea on Friday and Saturday.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bThis year\u2019s afternoon tea, \u201c<\/span>Spill the Tea<\/span><\/a>,\u201d includes vanilla bean scones, raspberry chocolate cake, a classic cucumber sandwich and a smoked salmon sandwich.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

London House<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bThe London House tea experience\u00a0is\u00a0in the\u00a0hotel lobby, which Levin found disappointing\u00a0as it was right next to where hotel guests check\u00a0in. The small bites, tropical-spiced clementine tea and river view are still worth the $100 per person, said Levin, who especially likes the\u00a0mini Yorkshire\u00a0pudding served during the holiday tea experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bFor Mother\u2019s Day,<\/span>\u00a0London House<\/span><\/a>\u00a0serves spring-inspired teas, including\u00a0Wild Berry Noir black tea and Sakura Cherry Blossom green tea. The sweets include an egg cup with white chocolate mousse and a lavender macaron, as well as rhubarb and orange poppy seed scones, and the savory items include chicken tikka masala,\u00a0samosa\u00a0and a spring vegetable quiche.\u200b<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Drake<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bBesides being known as a popular wedding venue dream, the\u00a0more than\u00a0100-year-old building gets\u00a0rave\u00a0reviews\u00a0for its afternoon tea in the Palm Court. The Drake offers traditional British tea and adds a pop-up shop every weekend that sells hats nearby. Princess Diana sipped tea in the Palm Court during her 1996 stay, said Kait Carmody, the former food and beverage manager at the Drake. A memorable touch in the room is the massive floral centerpiece, created by Mangel Florist for Princess Diana, on the ground floor.\u00a0So\u00a0the replica shown during the spring,\u00a0summer\u00a0and fall gives employees and guests a way to remember the former Princess of Wales.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bThe Drake offers a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>Spring Blossom<\/span><\/a>\u00a0tea service for $86 per adult and $38 per child ages 3 to 12. Items on the menu include chicken salad,\u00a0garlic-and-herb roasted beef,\u00a0crunch\u00a0cake\u00a0and a tropical fruit tart.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tea Around Town is the only U.S. afternoon tea experience on wheels. The pink floral bus, which arrived in Chicago last October, offers visitors both tea and a city sightseeing tour.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b\u201cMy most memorable moment was honestly just being there and listening to the lady sing and just looking out the window,\u201d said Jessica Enriquez, founder of the Northwest Indiana women\u2019s community Sisterhood Social. \u201cIt was my mother-in-law\u2019s birthday, and they sang her happy birthday, including her name, which I thought was really sweet.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bTea Around Town offers the Petite package (14 bites and teas for $69) and the Luxe package (21 bites and teas for $95).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bBoth menus offer a garden gala chicken soir\u00e9e and a mini lemon meringue.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The name Un-Tea is a modern spin on the tradition of afternoon tea \u2013 with Champagne instead of tea. The cost: $65 per person. Despite being at a\u00a0French hotel, the tea experience is still inspired by traditional British afternoon tea.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b\u201cWe did stay there over New Year’s, and I have to say it’s one of\u00a0my\u00a0favorite hotels I have ever stayed at,\u201d\u00a0content creator\u00a0Roya\u00a0Fox\u00a0content creator\u00a0said. \u201cThere were so many cute French touches. The\u00a0Champagne was\u00a0served from this adorable little glass teapot, which I thought was such a creative way to stay on theme.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the drinks on the menu: Chandon Brut, Sparkling and Veuve\u00a0Clicquot\u00a0Brut, Champagne. The savories include a tomato-and-basil tartine and beet tartare, and the sweets include pastry puffs and a coconut cupcake.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
