Gliding down the\u00a0Italian Renaissance-style\u00a0hallways\u00a0of the Drake Hotel\u00a0and\u00a0toward the main entrance of the Palm Court Tea Room,\u00a0Kait Carmody, the\u00a0hotel\u2019s\u00a0food and beverage manager, headed toward a hickory podium. She gave instructions to her team on organizing dozens of women’s fancy outfits, for their afternoon tea appointment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe has a bright spot about her,\u201d said Christopher Lindo,\u00a0a doorman\u00a0at the Drake. \u201cThe unspoken concierge.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That was in\u00a0April.\u00a0Carmody,\u00a032,\u00a0who had been\u00a0a\u00a0funny,\u00a0beloved manager by day and a funny,\u00a0beloved comedian at night, now focuses full-time on comedy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She is preparing with her comedy manager, Nicole Skokna, for year two of her \u201c<\/span>Off the L<\/span><\/a>\u201d comedy tour. The\u00a0\u00a0\u201cOff the L\u201d tour debuted in summer of 2025 with five shows, during which comedians, experienced or novice, had 20 minutes on stage at pop-up locations within a five-minute walk from the nearest stop in the Loop. \u200bCarmody is looking forward to her series of gigs,\u00a0\u00a0and \u201cOff the L\u201d this summer.\u00a0She\u00a0<\/span>is looking for\u00a0<\/span>comedians\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>fit her plans for the show.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want it to flow so well,\u201d Carmody said. \u201cSo\u00a0if I have a dark comedian who’s going really dark, I want him or her in the middle, and I want two outgoing, bubblier people at the beginning and end of the show, like a sandwich.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Until she was 13, Carmody lived in\u00a0the\u00a0suburbs of\u00a0Niles.\u00a0Her parents decided to move their family, including her, her younger\u00a0sister\u00a0and her brother,\u00a0to Racine, Wis., to help run an Irish pub. Carmody\u00a0considers herself \u201cIrish\u00a0Irish, not American Irish\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0her father was born in County Clare, Ireland, and\u00a0her mom\u2019s parents were from County Mayo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At 13, Carmody was washing dishes at her parents’ pub. For 10 years, she honed her skills in the restaurant industry, both in the kitchen and restaurant, working as a bartender and server. Then, in July 2021, Carmody landed her first job in the hotel industry as a front desk agent at the Drake Hotel in Chicago.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When Carmody started at the Drake Hotel, she became fascinated with\u00a0the hotel\u2019s history, which goes back more than a century.\u00a0She liked hearing firsthand stories from returning guests and staff about celebrities like Frank Sinatra \u2013 and learning from her family that her\u00a0great-grandfather from Ireland was an elevator operator at a hotel in Chicago.\u00a0Working in hospitality is \u201cgenerational,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In June\u00a02025, the food and beverage manager position became available.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA loud Irish woman managing your bar and you didn\u2019t want us here,\u201d said Carmody, sitting in\u00a0Al Capone\u2019s\u00a0rumored\u00a0829 suite\u00a0at the Drake\u00a0and explaining the bad blood between The Chicago Outfit and the Irish gangs. \u201cThat is karma. Should have started loving the Irish back then.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In her free time, she performs at comedy clubs throughout Chicago. In January, she did a set at Lincoln Lodge in<\/span>\u00a0\u201c<\/span><\/a>The Black Out Diaries<\/span><\/a>,\u201d\u00a0a 13-year-old weekly continuing series she\u00a0now\u00a0co-produces with other dedicated people in the comedy industry,\u00a0and creator and host Sean Flannery.\u00a010 minutes to tell\u00a0funny\u00a0drunk\u00a0stories\u00a0or\u00a0sober\u00a0ones,\u00a0through a presentation of photos from the event.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In early 2025, Carmody began her journey with\u00a0\u201cBlack Out Diaries\u201d\u00a0when Flannery met her previously at a bar called\u00a0\u201c<\/span>Comedy Bar<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she was\u00a0booked\u00a0her first time at\u00a0\u201cBlackout Diaries,\u201d\u00a0she thought one of the rules of the show was to go out and make a drinking story that week,\u201d Flannery said. \u201cWhich is not our rule at all. She has this hilarious story that she still does on the show, where she becomes a tourist for the day. She rents a hotel room at Navy\u00a0Pier, and\u00a0her friends come\u00a0down\u00a0and they get face paintings. But she\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0coordinate.\u00a0Her friends all wanted to have cute and pretty glamorous face painting.\u00a0But she had her face painted like a tiger,\u00a0like a child at a block party. And she has so many photos from it,\u00a0and the crowd just dies from laughter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bCarmody\u00a0started her\u00a0comedy career nine years ago in Grand Rapids, Mich. In her first skit, she focused on growing up Irish Catholic and being raised in her parents’ culture. Carmody likes speaking in front of crowds, dating back to second grade, when she wanted to do the main reading at her first Holy Communion but learned a boy named Andrew got the nod.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200b\u201cAnd I was like, OK, fine, whatever,\u201d she said, \u201cThe teacher, she pulls my mom and me over, she goes, \u2018Uh,\u00a0yeah, Andrew\u00a0can’t\u00a0do it.\u00a0He is actually having a panic attack.\u00a0Um, can your daughter step\u00a0up\u00a0and do it?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018I’m\u00a0ready.\u00a0Let’s\u00a0go.\u2019 And\u00a0so\u00a0my mom said she knew that I would be some public speaker because she was like,\u00a0‘You\u00a0had no fear.\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bFor the third year in a row, Carmody hosted \u201cWomen’s Christmas\u201d in January at Gaelic Park for the\u00a0Young Gaelic Association for women members, celebrating the traditional Irish holiday\u00a0\u201cNollaig\u00a0na\u00a0mBan,\u201d the Gaelic translation of the event\u2019s title. The holiday is a day of rest for Irish women from household chores, with men taking charge of household duties, marking the end of the holiday season. With Carmody as the host, participation has grown from dozens to hundreds. In February, Carmody hosted another\u00a0comedy show at Gaelic Park. Friends and family attended the event, including her younger sister, Sarah Carmody, who says she is her sister\u2019s No.1 fan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe would always kind of, like, be funny, but also commanding in a way,\u201d Sarah Carmody said.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt holds true to her, like commanding the stage and hosting events and knowing how to put together a set list and\u00a0all of\u00a0the things.\u00a0So\u00a0I think it\u00a0was all meant to be.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kait Carmody, who left The Drake in April, is\u00a0hosting another\u00a0show\u00a0at\u00a0<\/span>Gaelic Park<\/span><\/a>\u00a0June 19.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have decided to put comedy first for the first time,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said, \u201cAnd I\u2019m going to be having more gigs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
