(Lizz Giordano\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two ballot boxes from the 10th ward were sent downtown to Chicago Board of Elections headquarters to be counted,\u00a0 According to Garza, at least one of the boxes comes from an area where she is counting on strong support.<\/p>\n<p>Though Jesus \u201cChuy\u201d Garcia lost the mayoral race to Rahm Emanuel, he came out last week to rally support for Garza\u2019s campaign, along with Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) President Karen Lewis, and Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.<\/p>\n<p>In a raspy voice, after a full day of campaigning, Garza addressed her crowd of supporters at Crowbar at 4000 E. 106th St.\u00a0 \u201cWe might not find out until the morning, they\u2019re telling me,\u201d Garza said. \u201cSo it\u2019s just another night of me not sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some supporters wore CTU shirts. Garza is a school counselor at Jane Addams Elementary School in the 10th Ward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in the community have been waiting for 16 years to have a voice,\u201d said Anna Swiatek, 28, one of Garza\u2019s former students at Jane Addams. \u201cWe were able to do that because of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pope led by a very small margin for most of the night and Garza pulled ahead to 50.03 percent around 9:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Supporters shout for Susan Sadlowski Garza while the votes roll in. Lizz Giordano\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/124376840?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Representatives from Pope\u2019s campaign were confident that the work of their supporters would allow the alderman to retain his seat. \u201cTomorrow, tonight, at some point, the final votes are going to come in,\u201d said Jake Breymaier, representative for Ald. John Pope. \u201cAlderman John Pope will end up victorious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garza cautiously reminded her supporters that absentee and provisional ballots still need to be counted and that the results would not be known until tomorrow. \u201cRegardless of the outcome of this election, we have won already,\u201d Garza said. \u201cWe have started something in the 10th ward that people will never forget, we cannot walk out here and let it go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Petroleum coke, a byproduct of oil refining, became a major issue in the election.\u00a0 A coalition of neighborhood activists has been fighting for a ban of pet coke for two years. In February, the grassroots movement claimed several victories, including the announcement that KCBX Terminals will cease storing pet coke in the neighborhood by mid-2016.<\/p>\n<p>But the site will remain a transfer point as pet coke is transported\u00a0there via truck, rail and barge.
