Arts and music build essential skills such as creativity and innovation. But there is another important reason that many people may not have known.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have indicated that high school students who participate in bands score better grades on SAT exams and are more likely to do better in college.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Music Helps Southside School with Education\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/126430988?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A case study published in 2008 by Whitworth University says that music students are academically above average. Nearly 20 percent of the students accepted in Whitworth University have played in bands during high school. Whitworth is the 9<sup>th<\/sup> best regional University in the West Coast, according to the U.S. News and World Report rankings.<\/p>\n<p>With the financial crisis still looming and school budgets shrinking, many schools have had\u00a0to cut the spending on after-school activities.<\/p>\n<p>EPIC academy, a charter high school located in the Southside of Chicago lost many of its after-school programs that were funded by the government because of the city&#8217;s bad economic situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there was no way we couldn\u2019t have drum line,\u201d said Clarence Glenn, dean of Graduation at EPIC.<\/p>\n<p>EPIC Academy insisted on bringing back drum line, not only because students liked it, but also because it had a positive impact on the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a student who had a lot of issues in the classroom.&#8221; Glenn said. &#8220;He used to argue a lot with a lot of students. He was heading towards the path of gangs and violence, I told him come join drum line, and ever since he passed all his classes. He went from Fs to Cs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the academic impact, instructors say\u00a0drum line is unleashing many of the students\u2019 creativity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are co-creating these pieces and there is a real sense of ownership in that,\u201d said Michael Riendeau, drum teacher with Urban Gateways, who is teaching students at Epic academy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe music that we create is something that we do together. I don\u2019t feel that I am teaching them this thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four Layer Players, the name of the school\u2019s drum band, will perform at the House of Blues on Thursday morning. They will be performing \u201cMellow with a Twist,\u201d a song they created along with Riendeau.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took us about two week to get &#8216;Mellow with a Twist&#8217; down on paper and it took us another two weeks to get it to where we were performing it, like straight and solid,\u201d said Tiqo Leng\u00a0an\u00a0Epic Academy student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take so much pride into it,&#8221; he said, &#8220;because we think of it as our own little piece of art.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/cantv.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8953\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/05\/CAN-TV-logo.jpg\" alt=\"CAN TV logo\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/cantv.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MEDILL REPORTS<br \/>\nON CAN TV<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>In Chicago, watch Medill Reports video stories on CAN-TV channel 27<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Amina Ismail There are many reasons why educators encourage high school students to join band classes.
