\u201cWhat\u2019s going to happen when we\u2019re gone and they break open this box? What\u2019s going to be peoples\u2019 reactions,\u201d said Juan Giraldo, a photography student at Columbia College Chicago.<\/p>\n

Giraldo and\u00a0more than 300 art enthusiasts\u00a0turned out recently\u00a0 week to see the unveiling of a multi-million dollar expansion project, including the time capsule box and three new exhibitions at the Hyde Park Art Center on Chicago\u2019s south side.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would put some sort of digital media and see how they might be able to access that in the future, because everything nowadays seems to be going at the speed of light,\u201d said Giraldo. \u201cEverything is up in the air in terms of digital media and how to archive this, so it\u2019s a key to the past, both physically and technologically.\u201d<\/p>\n

The center broke ground on the Guida Family Creative Wing at a 75th<\/sup> anniversary reception, where executive director Kate Lorenz\u00a0 revealed plans for the time capsule project that will remain sealed \u00a0for 24 years.<\/p>\n

Artist Daniel Tucker, who recently a made documentary about a time capsule in Southern California, said he proposed Hyde Park’s capsule\u00a0as part of the celebration for the center\u2019s 100th<\/sup> anniversary in 2039.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a natural time to kind of reflect on their history,\u201d Tucker said. \u201cIf there is not sort of some meaningful date that\u2019s tied to it, people forget about it. There are tons of time capsules that never get found.\u201d<\/p>\n

The capsule will be placed inside a wall of the new wing in June with\u00a0 contributions such as artworks and poems. Community members are encouraged to donate items\u00a0for the time capsule but they must fit on an\u00a0\u00a08 \u00bd by 11 piece of paper.<\/p>\n

Tucker said contributing to a time capsule gives people a chance to step out of every day routines and think about both history and the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something exciting, where people have to kind of believe that a future exists. They have to believe that what they are putting out there might get discovered, and that what they are putting in there someone will find useful,\u201d Tucker said.<\/p>\n

A campaign kicked off in 2014 collected $6.25 million in donations for the new wing, which also will feature 5,000 square-feet of renovated\u00a0storage space for artist studios.<\/p>\n
