Guida said the Evanston market is worth the drive because of the customers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe organic market isn\u2019t as big in Michigan and there\u2019s no where you can drive in Michigan that makes it worth our time and money,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we come here, people appreciate their fresh produce and their fresh organics stuff and they\u2019ll give us a good price for it. Where as in Michigan it\u2019s kind of saturated with produce and fruit and the people are used to low low, low prices in Michigan and we just can\u2019t compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farmers from across the state and the Midwest drove hundreds of miles for the opening day &#8211; and the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of The Evanston Farmers\u2019 Market.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Evanston Farmers Market Celebrates its 40th Anniversary\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/127655380?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl rang the opening bell to kick off the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing about the farmers market that\u2019s so special to me is seeing old friends, making new friends. It\u2019s a community event, it\u2019s not just a place to go and buy stuff,\u201d Tisdahl said.<\/p>\n<p>Vendors from Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan \u2013 and most of the vendors came from Michigan &#8211; were selling asparagus, lettuce, flowers and baked goods. The majority of vegetables aren\u2019t ready for harvest and sale yet.<\/p>\n<p>Roy Elko\u2019s farm, a farmer from Cambria, Wisconsin, has been coming to the Evanston market since it first opened in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the only market that I do. I used to do Highland Park, Skokie, Dundee, Elgin \u2013 but I drive all the way from there to here. I go right past the Madison market within miles, to come here,\u201d Elko said. \u201cI love coming here and, like I said, I love the people that\u2019s what makes me come back year after year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s attitudes like Elko\u2019s that inspired Farmer Gretta Winkelbauer to drive two hours from Pecatonica, Illinois to sell her goat milk soap. This was her first time at the Evanston market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose Evanston from talking to other farmers because of their reputation for supporting local food and local farms,\u201d Winkelbauer said.<\/p>\n<p>Hahn\u2019s Bakery located in Geneva also made its debut at the market this year, selling bread and sweets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve heard that it\u2019s a really good market and it\u2019s really beautiful here, lots of traffic, get our name out there,\u201d said Beck Nebergall, Hahn\u2019s employee.<\/p>\n<p>John Litzau, a sales representative for Lavender on the Lake located in Northwest Wisconsin returned to the Evanston market for a fourth year to sell lavender products. The farm also sells at the Frankfort, Illinois market. Overall, Litzau said their business does better in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure exactly the reason for that, maybe because there\u2019s a higher concentration of people in the areas, but we generally do better financially at both of our Illinois markets than we do in Wisconsin,\u201d he said. \u201cSo they do very well for us. Let\u2019s put it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The market is open every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the intersection of University Place and Oak Avenue.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Asparagus was one of the only vegetables in season \u00a0for sale at the market&#8217;s opening day on May 9.
