Just ask Bill Curry, Westinghouse College Prep\u2019s boys\u2019 \u00a0basketball coach.<\/p>\n<p>Curry has only been the varsity coach for two years but has seen the cost of his labor add up, mainly in the form of paying for food and summer league fees for his student-athletes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do whatever you can, whatever you can get your hands on,\u201d Curry said. \u201cOften times, a coach looks at it and says, \u2018That was $35\u2019 or \u2018That was $89.\u2019 And you can try to turn it into the school, but the school doesn\u2019t have the money either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"VIDEO: High school athletics experiencing budget obstacles\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/127850177?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The tight budgets for Chicago Public Schools are proving problematic for athletic programs, especially for coaches who regularly must decide whether to spend their own money or do without certain necessities, including proper safety equipment for student-athletes, such as baseball helmets and catcher\u2019s gear.<\/p>\n<p>Amundsen baseball coach Francisco Caballero said in his four years as varsity coach, he has spent between $1,000 and $1,500 of his own money each year to pay for expenses that weren\u2019t covered by the sport\u2019s athletic budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, I decided to do a DonorsChoose program and received $2,000,\u201d Caballero said. \u201cI was able to buy brand new catcher\u2019s equipment, baseballs, helmets. This was the first year I haven\u2019t had to take money out of my pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many long-time faculty members, including Roosevelt athletic director Lorin Volberding, said he remembered a time when budget concerns weren\u2019t so dire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a time in my earlier years [17 years ago], when the (Department of) Sports Administration (and Facilities, a CPS athletics governing body) had supplied us with money,\u201d Volberding said. \u201cNow they don&#8217;t supply it. Money that comes from the state is used for instructional (purposes), not for miscellaneous, which is what athletics is under.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no such thing as miscellaneous funds for athletics. Because the district is so huge, there is not enough money to distribute to all the teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Athletics isn&#8217;t the only program suffering as a result of the deficit and subsequent budget cuts. Amundsen principal Anna Pavichevich said the entire school is having to prioritize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCPS is facing severe budget constraints, forcing administrators to make difficult decisions,\u201d Pavichevich said. \u201cThe primary goal is to keep it as close to the students as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Volberding said the recent thinning of the sports administration department, which he said is down from 36 staff members to six due to budget cuts, is causing a \u201ctrickle down\u201d that puts high school athletic departments in precarious positions.<\/p>\n<p>However, Volberding said if his athletes want customized equipment, they are responsible for the costs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a kid wants a name on the jersey, obviously they\u2019re paying for it,\u201d Volberding said. \u201cI don\u2019t believe in having my coaches pay for that kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Huffman, CPS deputy press secretary, declined to comment for this story. The\u00a0 Department of Sports Administration and Facilities did not return calls.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Denten, Roosevelt\u2019s head baseball coach, said the budgets aren\u2019t the biggest obstacle. He said the fundraising regulations CPS imposes are \u201cabsurd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo fundraise, it\u2019s impossible,\u201d Denten said. \u201cYou can\u2019t sell anything at school during school hours. I don\u2019t know what they expect us to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t even fundraise in your own cafeteria. CPS has a bunch of ridiculous stipulations. How do you expect us to raise any money when we can&#8217;t even sell stuff at lunch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curry expressed similar sentiments regarding fundraising restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFundraising is a nightmare,\u201d Curry said. \u201cThey have all these different restrictions. You can\u2019t even start fundraising on school grounds until 45 minutes after the final bell rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the students are forced out of the school well before that. So what, you think they\u2019re going to wait across the street for 30 minutes just to buy candy from us? No, they\u2019ll just go down to the corner store, grab some snacks and hop on the bus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All of the budget constraints and fundraising obstacles have resulted in frustration for many dedicated coaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the norm for coaches,\u201d Curry said. \u201cWhen you add up the wear and tear on your car, the food that you buy, the entry fees that you fork over, you\u2019re forking over a lot of your own personal cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you can say to keep the program running, but it\u2019s actually to keep the relationships growing with your players and to help them be safe and help them continue to develop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top:\u00a0Every baseball team needs a bat, but some high school coaches must pay out-of-pocket money for their team&#8217;s equipment.
