The founder of the\u00a0high-tech incubator\u00a01871, philanthropist J.B. Pritzker, called for risk-taking and revolution to create\u00a0Chicago’s \u201cnext big thing\u201d\u00a0at the annual luncheon of the Metropolitan Planning Council<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is the idea that we are willing to take risks that is going to get us the next wave or the next answer. You have to think in really big terms,\u201d said Pritzker.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cThe motto and mission of SpaceX is not a\u00a0\u2018great rocket up to the sky\u2019. The motto and mission is \u2018we are colonizing Mars,\u2019\u201d he\u00a0commented in recalling\u00a0his recent\u00a0trip to the SpaceX factory, making the audience laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow only half of you laugh and that\u2019s important. Because guess what? It is actually possible. It sounded crazy when he [Elon Musk] came up with the idea 10 years ago, but today only half of you laughed,\u201d he jabbed back.<\/p>\n

He also said that the\u00a0founder of Uber, Travis Kalanick, believed that for every Uber car on the road, seven passenger cars will be taken off the road, and when Uber is fully developed, it will replace about five acres of parking structures in Chicago.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a crazy notion that you can reclaim a traffic-less city, but it could happen and reduce the amount of money we spend in our roads and everything else with to do with our infrastructure for driving,\u201d Pritzker added.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s not make the next big thing something incremental. Let\u2019s actually think about transforming the city,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said that,\u00a0with its ambitious goal, SpaceX developed the technology to launch rockets at one-tenth the cost of its competitors in the process. Similarly, he hoped the bigger goal of \u201ctransforming the city\u201d would\u00a0stimulate other inventions.<\/p>\n

MarySue Barrett, president of the Planning Council, said\u00a0Pritzker’s comments are \u201creinforcement for MPC” because \u201cthinking big and thinking comprehensively put the people and the pieces together.\u201d She referred to MPC\u2019s Great Rivers Chicago<\/a> project, which redesigns the river system, from improving water quality to expanding the river walk to bringing together\u00a0the right mix of businesses and residences along the river.<\/p>\n

Pritzker also said that one admirable\u00a0characteristic of Millennials, people born between 1982 to 2000, is their desire to revolutionize everything they engage in to make\u00a0it all\u00a0better.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t incremental change that many Millennials are thinking about, but how do we flip the dialogue and how do we change the game so that we can truly take something this level and double it?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
