One of the most notable protests of that year was the bursar\u2019s office sit-in.<\/p>\n<p>Debra Hill, Adrianne Hayward and Sandra Hill were all students at Northwestern at the time of the protest. \u201cWe were silly enough to recognize that we could challenge the system. And go after what we thought we could deserve,\u201d said Debra Hill. She noted that the demonstration didn\u2019t happen over night. It was a build up of things that occurred over a period of time.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"VIDEO: NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY BURSAR&#039;S OFFICE SIT IN\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/130160018?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many of the black students on Northwestern\u2019s campus at the time felt isolated and not supported by the university. The students, led by a group of their peers, drafted a list of demands and sent them to the university\u2019s president. When they didn\u2019t receive a reply, the students decided to take action.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hayward, who was a sophomore at the time, none of the students other than their \u201csquad leaders\u201d knew what was truly going on. \u201cFollow instructions\u2026we weren\u2019t told any more details than that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said that she was told they were going to protest the Rebecca Crown Center. It wasn\u2019t until the demonstration was about to happen that she found out they would be taking over the bursar\u2019s office. \u201cAll I remember was \u2018bring Vaseline\u2019 because they might have mace and bring a change of clothes because we don\u2019t know how long you\u2019ll be there,\u201d said Debra Hill.<\/p>\n<p>Sandra Hill said she could not believe the support they received while they were occupying the office. \u201cIf you can imagine a big Mack truck\u2026open up the back\u2026and from top to bottom was nothing but supplies and food,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t know where they came from but I know the Evanston community\u2026 turned out for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After 38 hours, the students received an answer to their demands. To their surprise, many of the demands were granted by the university administration. The creation of a black student union and a black studies programs were among the items on the list that were accepted.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about her thoughts on having a lasting legacy on Northwestern University\u2019s campus, Debra Hill said the best part is the ability \u201cto be a living history for people that are coming through.
