{"id":16838,"date":"2015-07-07T12:22:24","date_gmt":"2015-07-07T17:22:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=16838"},"modified":"2015-07-07T12:22:24","modified_gmt":"2015-07-07T17:22:24","slug":"fraudulent-card-use-still-costing-cta-millions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/fraudulent-card-use-still-costing-cta-millions\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraudulent cards cost CTA millions (VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lydia Randall and Sara Shouhayib<\/p>\n<p>Fraudulent use of subsidized Chicago Transit Authority cards in the last six months has cost CTA more than six million dollars, but such cases of fraud are on the decline.<\/p>\n<p>CTA began the effort to curtail fraudulent card use last November, when it was revealed that cases of card misuse were frequent at some of the city\u2019s busiest stations.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Lydia CTA live shot\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/132376477?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The CTA reported today a decline in the excessive use of these cards, and a decline in the number of cards confiscated since November. But despite the drop, the authority has confiscated more than 5000 cards from unauthorized users since the crack down.<\/p>\n<p>Free-ride and reduced-fare cards are issued for senior citizens, people with disabilities and students. The largest number of violations occurred at the CTA\u2019s busiest stations, including Clark\/Lake, Belmont and the 95<sup>th<\/sup> Street station.<\/p>\n<div id=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: The CTA station at Clark\/Lake was the site of many card violations.
