The\u202fWeeknd\u202fwas back in Chicago with\u202f\u201cThe Madness\u201d tour at the United Center on Nov.\u202f6.\u202fThe\u202fconcert also featured\u202fopening acts Travis\u202fScott\u202fand Banks.<\/p>\n

The tour features The Weeknd\u2019s latest album \u201cThe Beauty Behind\u202fThe Madness,\u201d which debuted at number one on\u202fthe Billboard 200 chart at its Aug. 28 release and spent three consecutive weeks in this\u202fposition.<\/p>\n

His show was a sensory experience with visuals and sounds, engaging the\u202faudience\u202ffrom beginning to end.<\/p>\n

The concert clicked in the visual\u202fappeal from the start.\u202f While many opening acts have no set designs, paying their dues by performing on a bare stage, both Travis\u202fScott and Banks set the mood with impressive, intricate set designs.<\/p>\n

Travis\u202fScott’s\u202fset design followed the\u202fsame theme as his 2015 album\u00a0 \u201cRodeo,\u201d with cactus,\u202fwooden\u202fbarrels and wheels\u202fand a\u202fbackground\u202fscreen of\u202fmountains\u202fto give the stage the feeling of the\u202fWest.\u202fBanks\u202fset matched her witchy\u202faesthetic\u202fwith fog and\u202fwhite\u202fstrobe lights.<\/p>\n

Scott hyped the crowd for the upcoming acts by\u202fperforming\u202fsongs from his “Rodeo” album\u202flike\u202f”Pornography” and “Pray\u202f4\u202fLove.” He got the crowd on their feet, excited for all of the performances of the night.\u202f However, he did leave a\u202fsour taste\u202fin fans mouth who came to see him, showing up 15 minutes late\u202ffor his 30 minute set.<\/p>\n

“I\u202fcame a little late, so they are going to try to cut me off,”\u202fScott\u202fsaid.<\/p>\n

This is not\u202fScott’s first time being tardy for his set time.\u202f He was also late for his set\u202fat this year\u2019s\u202fLollapalooza.<\/p>\n

Banks, who toured with The Weeknd for his 2013 “The Fall” tour,\u202ftook command of the stage. She\u202fcame out, wearing all black and\u202fstrutted slowly around the stage\u202fwhile opening with “Alibi,” the same song that opens her debut album, “Goddess” from 2014. By the third verse of the song she stood center stage, staring\u202fstraight\u202fat the\u202fcrowd\u202fwhile\u202fraising\u202fher hands slowly up and down, as if she was casting a\u202fspell.\u202f She\u202fcaptivated the crowd who could not keep\u202ftheir eyes off her during\u202fthe rest of her set that included “This\u202fis What\u202fit Feels Like” and “Brain.”<\/p>\n

Even though many of her songs are about heartbreak and feeling helpless and confused in a relationship, Banks entertained with complete\u202fcontrol on stage, breaking through the fog that was apart of her set\u202fand standing strong.<\/p>\n

After the two opening acts, it was time for the main event.\u202fThe lights went black and\u202fcame up again, the Weekend appeared on stage behind a series of mesh screens, similar to a cage.\u202fThe\u202ftypically\u202freclusive\u202fand camera shy R&B singer leaped to life on-stage with “Real Life,” the opening track on his Billboard number one album “Beauty Behind The Madness.” He seemed to hide behind the mesh of a backdrop until\u202fthe secret\u202fwas revealed mid-song. The\u202fmesh is a video screen that allows graphics to appear in front of\u202fhim, adding visual drama to each song he\u202fperformed.\u202fFor\u202finstance, when he performed “The\u202fBirds\u202f(Part I)”\u202fthe screens was filled with white birds flapping their wings furiously, matching the intense energy of the lyrics.<\/p>\n

The screens were an innovation since his headlining\u202fact\u202fat this year\u2019s\u202fLollapalooza.<\/p>\n

But The Weeknd didn’t stay behind the screens for all of the\u202fshow.\u202fA\u202fstage platform rose while the crowd looked on in awe as\u202fhe appeared d above the\u202fscreen.\u202fHe\u202flooked like a king reveling in his kingdom. The large crowd of fans showed their support wearing The Weeknd t-shirts and tour shirts from his previous three tours.<\/p>\n

During\u202fthe songs “Crew Love” and “The Hills,” fire exploded on the\u202fstage to the audience’s\u202fexcitement.\u202fThe\u202ffire seemed to\u202femphasize\u202fthe massive effect these songs have had on his career.\u202f “Crew Love” is the song featuring him with celebrity r artist\u202fDrake’s\u202ffrom Drake’s\u202f2011 album “Take Care.” That\u202fintroduced\u202fThe Weeknd to a larger\u202faudience.\u202fHis song “The Hills”\u202frecently hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for five weeks.\u202fThe crowd screamed in excitement, singing along to every word when he sang it.<\/p>\n

The Weeknd\u202fearned audience attention by playing his entire repertoire of songs from his 2011 mix tapes to\u202fperforming\u202fevery song off the album “Beauty Behind\u202fThe Madness.”\u202f The dance lessons that he\u202fmentioned\u202ftaking in his October 2015\u202f”Rolling Stone”\u202finterview\u202fpayed\u202foff. He grooved and danced along to his upbeat songs like “Can’t Feel My Face.” The highlight of his show was his\u202fmash-up\u202fof Michael\u202fJackson’s\u202f”Dirty Diana,”\u202fwhich he covered on his mixtape “Echoes of Silence, ” and “In The Night,” the latest single that is influenced by\u202fJackson’s\u202fsound.<\/p>\n

Although\u202fThe Weeknd’s the set design and performance\u202fmade for an incredible show, he did not seem totally connected to the audience.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t speak a lot to the audience. And when he did, he kept to simple stock statements, like when he shouted to the crowd “This is the biggest party in the city!”<\/p>\n

He let the music speak for him, but the\u202faudience\u202fwould have enjoyed hearing him talk about the inspirations behind the songs. Although the Weeknd has had a big year with his Billboard number one album and two number one Billboard Hot 100 singles, he said\u202fthere is more to come.<\/p>\n

“I think\u202fit’s\u202fsafe to say this has been a great year for xo,” said The Weeknd,\u202freferring\u202fto his label and crew name “xo.”\u202f”Next year is very special too, but I don’t want to give no secrets away.”<\/p>\n

He ended the concert with an encore, performing “Wicked Games” to the\u202fpacked stadium. He bowed down to his\u202ffans\u202fand showed his\u202fgratitude.\u202fThe\u202fWeeknd couldn\u2019t be in the mega star position without them.<\/p>\n
