(Nausheen Akhter\/Muslim Leadership Academy) <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div>\n<p>The gathering of 115 adults and kids started with an ice-breaking pizza dinner and a \u201cReligion101\u201d dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s the name of your God?\u201d asked a Jewish child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAllah. \u2018A\u2019 means \u2018the\u2019, \u2018llah\u2019 means \u2018God.\u2019 No gender, not plural,\u201d answered Ayesha Akhtar, a mother of two, at the same table. \u201cJust like you believe in only one God. We also believe in one God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coming with her 11- and 13-year-old sons, Akhtar said the opportunity to mingle with people of another religion is especially important for youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want them to be comfortable with who they are, but also comfortable with their neighbors, to know their neighbors, and be kind to their neighbors,\u201d said Akhtar. \u201cI don\u2019t want religion to define who they are. After all, we are all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the dinner, attendees were divided into three groups. Kids under 10 listened to tzedakah and sadaqah stories and painted charity boxes. Teens from 11 to 15 discussed the idea and traditions of tzedakah and sadaqah. Adults were led by Rabbi Max Weiss of Oak Park Temple and Omer Mozaffer, principal of Muslim Leadership Academy, in learning scriptures and parables about tzedakah and sadaqah in the Torah and Quran.<\/p>\n<div class=\"quoteright\">\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want religion to define who they are. After all, we are all Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0Ayesha Akhtar, a Muslim mother of two<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very interesting to listen to the teachings from a knowledgeable person from another religion,\u201d said Faaiza Mahoud, a Muslim, after the discussion. \u201cThis makes you appreciate and respect people of different faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Noor-Fatima Asad, 12, described her experience as \u201cpopping the bubble around me and go out of it.\u201d Asad\u2019s mother Farah Noor Cheema brought her here with the hope that such experience can make her tolerant toward other faith groups.<\/p>\n<p>Later, all the families reconvened to make peanut butter and jam sandwiches for the Rev. Vinson\u2019s Outreach Mission, which delivers meals to the indigent in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Annika Rothbaum, the social action chair of the synagogue, said the tzedakah idea of helping the needy resonates at this time of year in all Abrahamic traditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made 10 sandwiches!\u201d said Eve, Annika\u2019s 9-year-old daughter. \u201cIt was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Eve said she would \u201cfeed the kitty every day and buy food with the money and donate it to the food pantry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Kaufman, the event, while planned in September, is \u201ceven more valuable and informative\u201d in the wake of the Paris attacks and the California shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn every group there\u2019s a variety of people,\u201d said synagogue member Joan Kohnke. \u201cEven though bad things are happening in other parts of the world, we\u2019re counteracting those with good things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kohnke described the event as \u201can appetizer,\u201d and said she expects future activities to help synagogue members interact with and learn more about the Muslim community. Her wish is likely to come true next spring, when the Muslim community planned to invite their Jewish friends to the Mosque for a similar event, according to Akhtar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur religion has been used to separate and shield each other, but it really doesn\u2019t need to be that way,\u201d said Akhtar.<\/p>\n<p>Kaufman agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen communities come to each other, break down walls and stereotypes, and focus on what we have in common, how we can learn from each other and grow together,\u201d she said, \u201cwe will not be afraid of each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Tzedakah and Sadaqah boxes painted by Jewish and Muslim children.
