Located within Tamarkin Camera, 300 W. Superior St., the gallery displays 21 images from two different projects: \u201cLights in Chicago\u201d and \u201cFrances Cabrini Rowhouses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At first glance, the Leica camera strung around Nagata\u2019s shoulder appears old and out of date, but behind the unassuming lens is a digital screen that has allowed Nagata to document the city in a modern manner.<\/p>\n<p>Nagata\u2019s photographs are made possible by the small, unassuming M8 and M9 Leica cameras that allowed him, in his words, to get passed \u201cthe fine line with a stranger and then become a documentary photographer,\u201d as close as necessary to the subject.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22684\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22684\" style=\"width: 474px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22684 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/Lights-in-the-City-ft.-Leica-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Lights in the City&quot; ft. (Elizabeth Bacharach\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leica, whose cameras Tamarkin Gallery Sales Manager Ernie Deak regards as \u201cessentially a revolution,\u201d introduced the first 35-mm camera at the 1925 Leipzig Spring Fair in Germany. Known today for other praised aspects like its rangefinder, which measures the distance between a photographer and the subject, Leica has garnered a reputation as a trusted brand amongst photographers, artists and camera collectors.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dan Tamarkin, owner of Tamarkin Camera, \u201cThere\u2019s nothing like a Leica camera. (Elizabeth Bacharach\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Originally, Nagata used a Canon for his street photography when he \u201cdidn\u2019t know that photography is art\u201d and treated his camera like a \u201ctoy.\u201d Beginning to use a Leica because he thought that was how \u201cto make art,\u201d Nagata grew to appreciate the camera for its small lens, which is \u201cnot so overwhelming for the subject,\u201d and its manual focus, which is \u201cvery accurate and fast compared to the regular DSLR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only does Nagata\u2019s art in \u201cLights in the City\u201d speak about and to Chicago, it also aligns with the gallery and store\u2019s focus on Leica; \u201cIt\u2019s a very interesting combination of work and\u2026a lot of it says Leica through and through and a lot of it says Chicago through and through,\u201d Tamarkin said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in conversation Nagata focused more on the goal of his displayed photographs rather than the camera\u2019s role in capturing the moments. Considering himself an artist instead of a journalist, Nagata emphasized that he wants his images \u201cto be open to the viewer\u201d rather than be \u201ctoo close\u201d or \u201ctoo obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22686\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22686 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/12\/Lights-in-the-City-art-278x300.jpg\" alt=\"Nagata regards this image as a good example of documentary photography as art as compared to journalism. (Elizabeth Bacharach\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tamarkin agreed with Satoki\u2019s mission and said the show is \u201cvery provocative and it gets people talking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exhibit visitor and Toronto-based photographer Dale M. Reid felt similarly and said, \u201cI am very impressed. The quality of the work\u2026is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nagata added that he is always looking for a connection between himself and the photographed subject and scene: \u201cIf I see something inside of me is there, then I make an image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This emphasis on connection between photographer and subject and art and viewer is reflective of Zen Buddhism, which has had an influence on Nagata, who uses \u201ca camera to make connections with the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For self-described \u201cLeica expert\u201d Tamarkin, these connections are made that much more possible by Leica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese very intimate portraits from the Cabrini series would only have been possible with a photographer who is accepted in their environment,\u201d Tamarkin said, \u201cand who\u2019s using a small, unobtrusive camera.
