{"id":23587,"date":"2016-01-13T16:55:08","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T22:55:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=23587"},"modified":"2016-03-08T14:31:27","modified_gmt":"2016-03-08T20:31:27","slug":"better-living-through-electricity-keeping-asian-carp-out-of-the-great-lakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/better-living-through-electricity-keeping-asian-carp-out-of-the-great-lakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Better living through electricity \u2014 keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Danielle Prieur<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">The only thing keeping Asian carp from escaping \u00a0into Lake Michigan is an \u00a0electrical barrier located along the river.<\/p>\n<p>The barrier doesn\u2019t actually electrocute the \u00a0fish, but repels them when they encounter the strong electrical field.<\/p>\n<p>But some researchers are concerned about whether the barrier can withstand the movement of barges through the river.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"related\">\n<h2>Related stories<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/forecasting-future-of-asian-carp-in-great-lakes-an-erie-story\/\" target=\"_blank\">Forecasting future of Asian carp in Great Lakes: an Erie story<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Marc Gaden, communications director and legislative liaison for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission in Ann Arbor, Mich., said Chicago is one of three potential entry points for Asian carp into the Great Lakes. The others are \u00a0Lake Ohio near Cleveland and Eagle Marsh near Fort Wayne, Indiana, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gaden said the Chicago entry point poses \u201cthe biggest risk. &#8230; If they got into Lake Michigan they could swim their way around or larvae could be transported in a ballast tank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Chuck Shay, Chicago district project manager for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, who focuses on the electrical barrier, said there have been no problems with it so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome work has been done with fish getting caught up in the immediate vicinity of the barrier and then pulled across, but it hasn\u2019t been quantified yet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers tests the effectiveness of the barriers by tagging fish near the barriers and monitoring their journey along the river.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We capture fish, not Asian carp. (Courtesy\/U.S. Army Corp of Engineers Chicago)<\/div>\n<p>He said these tests are ongoing, but it\u2019s \u201cimportant to note that we have never collected or captured Asian carp at these barriers to our knowledge. We don\u2019t believe there are any Asian carp on a regular basis challenging barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam Finney, fish biologist at the Midwest Regional Office of the \u00a0U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Downstate Carterville, agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not pushing up against the barrier all the time,\u201d he said, \u201cThat\u2019s a misconception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three electrical barriers \u00a0are located at different points along the Chicago River,\u00a0said Finney.<\/p>\n<p>Direct current is pulsed through the water. As fish swim in the river they encounter the electrical field and are repelled. \u201cElectricity in water works better on bigger fish,\u201d Finney said.<\/p>\n<p>Although it has deterred most of the bigger fish like Asian carp, \u201cthe bigger fish are repelled,\u201d some smaller fish have been able to swim through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall fish some about two inches can swim through, not all but some,\u201d Finney said. \u201cThere are also some concerns with barges going through the barrier and warping it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With these concerns in mind, other types of \u201cbarriers\u201d are being researched including a carbon dioxide barrier and another location for an electrical barrier at Brandon Road Lock and Dam in Joliet, as a backup to the electrical barrier in the Chicago River.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they were stopped at Brandon, there would be no access to other pathways,\u201d Finney said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">An electrical barrier keeps Asian carp out of the Chicago river.
