A few young African-American\u00a0activists in Chicago became well known late last year\u00a0during\u00a0a series of protests following\u00a0the release of a video showing police shooting 17-year-old\u00a0Laquan McDonald, but\u00a0along with\u00a0recognition for these young protesters came some criticism.<\/p>\n

Among the\u00a0thousands of young people\u00a0led by Black Youth Project 100 was Lamon Reccord. On\u00a0the day after Thanksgiving, while\u00a0protesters took over Michigan Avenue on Black Friday, Reccord stared down a police officer. \u00a0A\u00a0photograph<\/a> of the moment was featured\u00a0prominently in\u00a0newspapers and on television around\u00a0the world.<\/p>\n

As the image spread, and he continued to stare down other police officers,\u00a0the\u00a0young protester\u00a0was in the spotlight, leading some on social media to say\u00a0he was\u00a0more interested in bringing\u00a0notice to himself than to the cause.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I have no choice, but to let them talk,” said Reccord.\u00a0“But I know what’s my fight and what I am fighting for. It is not about me.”<\/p>\n

Many older organizers and young activists do agree that the infusion of youth has drawn\u00a0positive attention to the cause, and is vital for\u00a0activism\u00a0going forward.<\/p>\n

“Frankly, I think everybody is looking at young people. Are you all gonna to be there?” said Mike Holman, an organizer for the\u00a0Stop Mass Incarceration Network in Chicago. “Because if it is all old people demonstrating against this, pretty soon my generation is gone.”<\/p>\n

Reccord says the media attention has allowed him to establish his own platform, and he is now using his available resources to work on a project that helps Chicago’s homeless.<\/p>\n
