{"id":24428,"date":"2016-01-20T12:37:25","date_gmt":"2016-01-20T18:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=24428"},"modified":"2016-01-21T11:28:47","modified_gmt":"2016-01-21T17:28:47","slug":"chicago-at-center-of-renewed-war-on-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/chicago-at-center-of-renewed-war-on-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago at center of renewed war on abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Text By <a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?s=aryn+braun\" target=\"_blank\">Aryn Braun<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Video By <a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?s=hannah+gebresilassie\" target=\"_blank\">Hannah Gebresilassie<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">The battle over abortion rights raged last weekend in Chicago, when competing protests clashed over the legality and morality of abortion in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion rights activists lined up at the corner of Adams and Dearborn in 4-degree weather Sunday to protest <a href=\"http:\/\/illinoisrighttolife.org\/march-for-life-chicago\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago\u2019s March for Life<\/a>, a smaller version of the annual pro-life march planned for later this week in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just bothers me that abortion is even legal in this country,\u201d said Lauren Devan, as she took a break from dancing around the plaza at her very first March for Life.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The counterprotest, dubbed the March for Abortion Rights, was organized by local feminist group <a href=\"http:\/\/furie.strikingly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FURIE<\/a>, and drew close to 300 purple-clad protesters, compared with the March for Life\u2019s estimated 3,000. The two protests were planned around the 43rd anniversary of historic Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Abortion Rights Activists Protest March for Life Rally\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/152429430?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Despite nearly subzero temperatures, pro-life and abortion rights activists took over Dearborn Street, advocating for their respective causes. (Hannah Gebresilassie\/MEDILL)<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe only people who protest around Roe v. Wade are anti-choice people,\u201d said Lauren Bianchi, a founding member of FURIE. \u201cThey\u2019ve turned it into a rallying cry to try to remove abortion rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fueling the fire is the Supreme Court, which in November agreed to hear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/whole-womans-health-v-cole\/\" target=\"_blank\">Whole Woman\u2019s Health v. Cole<\/a>, a case from Texas many believe could be the third installment in an abortion rights triumvirate, following Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Everything from FURIE to Women and Children First, to the Roxane Gay-Gloria Steinem event that happened in October, there\u2019s momentum,\u201d said Cate Harriman, a member of the Feminist Literary Society of Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the street, rally-goers streamed into Federal Plaza to attend the 10th annual Chicago March for Life. Those living in remote areas will be left without viable, safe and legal abortion services if unable to make the long drive to a big city, where the 10 remaining clinics would be, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/cola\/txpep\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Policy Evaluation Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe impact is going to be devastating,\u201d said Amanda Williams, executive director of the Austin-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lilithfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lilith Fund<\/a>, which helps low-income women pay for abortions in central and south Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The court is set to decide the case at the end of term in June, pushing the issue into the spotlight right as the presidential race takes center-stage.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago\u2019s anti-abortion and abortion rights groups are watching the case closely and attempting to rally support for their respective sides.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a battle that people have been fighting for a long time, and it\u2019s something that generations of women have had to deal with,\u201d Harriman said. \u201cWe\u2019re still fighting that good fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Students form the front line of Chicago&#8217;s 10th annual March For Life shouting, &#8220;We are the pro-life generation!&#8221; (Aryn Braun\/MEDILL)<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Text By Aryn Braun Video By Hannah Gebresilassie The battle over abortion rights raged last weekend in Chicago, when competing protests clashed over the legality and morality of abortion in the United States.
