Recent studies show that Asian-Americans regard gun control as \u201cimportant,\u201d more so on average than other ethnicities.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Pew Research Center, the support for gun control generally<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/data-trend\/domestic-issues\/gun-control\/\" target=\"_blank\"> surpassed<\/a> the support for gun rights as of July last year, but only barely.\u00a0 Yet for Asian-American voters, that support rises to 80 percent, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/aapivoices.com\/gun-control-asian-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014 data<\/a> from APIAVOTE and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.<\/p>\n<p>One reason for that disparity might be that Asians are the least likely ethnicity to own a gun.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Understanding Diversity in Target Shooting and Hunting <\/span>research commissioned by the National Shooting Sports Foundation in 2013 found that Asian-Americans were the highest ethnic group to say that \u201cin my own culture, owning a firearm is not desirable\u201d (38%) and that \u201cgun ownership negatively impacts my ethnic community\u201d (35%).<\/p>\n<p>The report put the likelihood of Asians owning a gun at 24 percent. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewire.com\/national\/2012\/12\/nate-silver-gun-ownership-demographics\/60131\/\" target=\"_blank\">A report by Nate Silver in 2008 put the percentage even lower, at 15 percent.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There has been a divide between US-born and foreign-born Asian immigrants when it comes to their support for stricter gun laws, with data indicating that older Asian-Americans are more supportive of stricter gun laws, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/aapivoices.com\/gun-control-asian-americans\/\" target=\"_blank\">2014 data<\/a> from APIAVOTE and Asian Americans Advancing Justice<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst generation immigrants are more conservative, with their own culture. But second or third generations, their mind-set is very different from first generations. It\u2019s more American-oriented,\u201d observes Samuel Tang, a pastor for a Chinese Church group in Evanston and first-generation immigrant who has lived in America for over 20 years. \u201cOwnership of a gun is a freedom of choice in America [but] I think the government should have some guidelines or rules for certain guns to be illegal for citizens to carry or own.\u201d<br \/>\nTang also stated that he believes that gun control is \u201cone of the most debated issues for the coming election,\u201d and that \u201cin the Chicago area, most Asian-Americans are against [guns].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Cheng, a professional marksman and the champion of History Channel\u2019s fourth season <em>Top Shot<\/em> competition, a reality television show featuring competitors in shooting challenges, may be the most dramatic example of a changing demographic.<\/p>\n<p>Cheng, a second-generation immigrant, states that he had \u201ca very positive foundation and experience for firearms as a young kid,\u201d and that his \u201cAsian family and friends were fairly supportive of my decision to take up the shooting sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Vivek Murthy, the current Acting Surgeon General of the United States and also a second-generation immigrant, drew opposition from the National Rifle Association when he was nominated to the office due to Murthy\u2019s position that gun violence is a threat to public health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s something that\u2019s argued about demographic to demographic,\u201d says NRA spokesperson Lars Dalseide. \u201cAsian-Americans compete in tactical police competitions all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A breakdown of Asian-Americans indicates that there is only a 12 percent difference among groups\u00a0 in their support for gun control, with Vietnamese and Koreans the strongest advocates.<\/p>\n<h2>Support for Stricter Gun Laws Among Asian-Americans, 2014<\/h2>\n<p>[field name=&#8221;chart&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">In general, Asians have more than average support for stricter gun laws. Data source: APIAVote &amp; Asian Americans Advancing Justice &#8211; AAJC 2014 Survey<\/div>\n<p>\u201cGenerally speaking, Asians are a pretty apathetic voting bloc,\u201d adds Cheng. \u201cThe second amendment is not first and foremost in the immigrants\u2019 minds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to the data, Cheng argues that \u201cAsians are not necessarily pro-gun control. I\u2019d like to think that most Asian-Americans don\u2019t like to think about gun control or gun rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you come to America, you should believe in American values. While a desire for better economic opportunity and freedom are important, understanding our Constitution is arguably even more important. The right to defend yourself with a gun, women&#8217;s rights, and civil rights are just a few of the many freedoms we value in America,\u201d adds Cheng.<\/p>\n<p>Cheng notes that he was recently invited to join the NSSF\u2019s Diversity Advisory Board to help the firearm industry increase minority participation in the shooting sports, and is excited to continue advocating for diversity in America.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/127473\/gun-control-can-swing-2016-election\" target=\"_blank\">With gun control being possibly one of the more divisive issues\u00a0as the 2016 elections<\/a>\u00a0draw near,\u00a0the evolving attitudes of Asian-American voters regarding their stance on guns may very well determine which candidates they shoot for.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: According to Chris Cheng, the right to bear arms is not as important to Asian-American voters.
