Mac Irvin elbowed his older brother, Nick Irvin, so he could dunk the basketball on the makeshift backyard court of his South Side house.<\/p>\n

He smirked at him and pointed to his T-shirt, which read \u201cMac Irvin Fire,\u201d the name of his late father\u2019s Nike-sponsored AAU team.<\/p>\n

Competition runs deep in the Irvin family, which produced five of the top basketball coaches in Illinois.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The late McGlother \u201cMac\u201d Irvin and his wife, a softball coach for a public school, raised four sons and a daughter: former Portland Trial Blazers shooting guard, Byron; former Fresno State point guard Nick; the coach of Mac Irvin Fire, Mac; assistant coach of\u00a0Southern Illinois University, Lance; and former high school point guard, Cynthia.<\/p>\n

\u201cCoaching is the Irvin family\u2019s calling,\u201d said Danielle Williams, a former Whitney Young point guard.<\/p>\n

When Corry Carter, the Whitney Young girls\u2019 basketball coach, married Mac and became Corry Irvin, she knew she needed to carry on her new clan’s tradition.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father laid a legacy for us, and we are just trying to follow his lead and trying to do what he did,” said Nick Irvin, the head coach of Morgan Park boys\u2019 basketball team and Mac Irvin\u2019s youngest son. “And that has helped kids get into college and help fulfill their dream.\u201d <\/p>\n

Deryl \u201cD\u201d Carter, Corry Irvin\u2019s father and former coach of the North Central College men\u2019s basketball team, and her brother Deryn Carter, head coach of Larkin High School\u2019s head basketball coach, FaceTime with Corry after games and practices and discuss team strategy.<\/p>\n

What makes them tick?<\/p>\n

Their brutal honesty.<\/p>\n

Every day, Corry requires her players to lift weights for half an hour and to run three miles. Mac frequently tells her she is soft on them. He makes his athletes log eight miles. Her response (with an eye roll): \u201cWe\u2019re doing just fine, Mac.\u201d<\/p>\n

The husband and wife team up. Mac teaches offense, and Corry teaches defense.<\/p>\n

Corry, a point guard, handles \u201cpositioning and basketball IQ,\u201d and Mac, a forward, takes on \u201cfootwork,” said Campbell.<\/p>\n

The Irvins always required their players to dress well, earn good grades, speak politely \u2013 and play good basketball, said Campbell. \u201cIt was about working on converting your 3.5 GPA to a 4.0 GPA.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their relationship with the Whitney Young Dolphins runs deeper than on the court. The Irvins take their players on vacations to Hawaii and Puerto Rico, where they relax, recuperate and think about their season ahead.<\/p>\n

A few years ago they brought former point guard Linnae Harper with them to Hawaii, where they played laser tag, took motorboat rides and water skied. \u201cWe had a ball,\u201d said Mac.<\/p>\n

Every Christmas, Mac and Corry invite the team and the rest of the Irvin\u00a0family to their three-bedroom house, filled with their three young sons\u2019 toy trucks, cars and bicycles. They eat mashed potatoes, salad, roasted pork and apple pie, and then share joke presents (like a can opener) bought from the Dollar Store.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also always go to [Corry and Mac\u2019s sons\u2019] birthday parties,\u201d said junior center Sloane Kistinger. \u201cCoach always says that every year she has 12 to 15 daughters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Competition and Irvin go hand in hand. From playing shoot outs with each other to yelling instructions to the players from the sidelines, the family always wants to win \u2013 a quality that senior point guard Kiara Lewis calls \u201cinfectious.\u201d<\/p>\n

During intense backyard and gym shootouts, players and family members shout curse words (\u201check\u201d and beyond). They tease each other that they are the better shooters, but they are evenly matched.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember when I was going to Cincinnati when I was in sixth grade, Mac took me in the backyard and said, \u2018If you\u2019re going to stop embarrassing me, you\u2019re going to work on this left hand,\u2019\u201d Nick said. \u201cHe kept me there for hours helping me learn how to shoot with my left hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mac holds his kin and his team to the same high standards.<\/p>\n

\u201cMac is very competitive and has to win,\u201d said Gary Lewis, senior point guard Kiara Lewis\u2019s father and Lady Hurricane\u2019s coach. \u201cThere is no exception to this rule, and the players have to be the best at what they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

They help each other, with Nick encouraging his stars to visit Corry\u2019s team and vice versa, said Deryn.<\/p>\n

They say they never feel envious of one another\u2019s accomplishments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want each other to succeed in our coaching jobs,\u201d said Deryl Carter. \u201cSo there is always a positive energy in the group.\u201d<\/p>\n

The death of Nick and Mac\u2019s father brought them closer, said Deryn Carter. \u201cWe realize when things are not under our control, and that mellowed us down.\u201d<\/p>\n

During family outings, they talk about \u201cpolitics, changing diapers and voting\u201d \u2013 but not basketball, said Deryn Carter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe love working with each other,\u201d said Deryn\u2019s father, Deryl Carter. \u201cWe want to see collective success, and that is why even our arguments end up being a calm and composed discussion.\u201d<\/p>\n
