{"id":27569,"date":"2016-01-30T19:24:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-31T01:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=27569"},"modified":"2016-01-30T19:24:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-31T01:24:00","slug":"sanders-calls-again-for-legalization-of-pot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/sanders-calls-again-for-legalization-of-pot\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanders calls again for legalization of pot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Misha Euceph<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> DAVENPORT, Iowa &#8212;<\/strong> Bernie Sanders renewed his call for the legalization of marijuana, framing it at a campaign rally here as a racially charged criminal justice issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to rethink the so-called war on drugs,\u201d\u00a0 Sanders told supporters at the Danceland Ballroom on Friday. \u201cRight now, in the Federal Controlled Substance Act, marijuana is in the same Schedule I as heroin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Vermont senator introduced a bill in November to remove marijuana from the list of schedule I substances. He favors legalization across the country, but said he would leave the decision to state legislatures.<\/p>\n<p>Four states have legalized marijuana for recreational use, while more than a dozen others permit medicinal use.<\/p>\n<p>The Drug Enforcement Administration defines Schedule I substances as &#8220;drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.&#8221;\u00a0 The agency classifies them as \u201cthe most dangerous of all the drug schedules with potentially severe psychological or physical dependence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not currently approved marijuana as a medicinal drug, two FDA approved drugs contain marijuana-derived chemicals, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Misha Euceph DAVENPORT, Iowa &#8212;
