The Des Moines Register\u2019s final poll Saturday night put his support as a meager 3 percent. Worse, 41 percent of caucus goers said they don\u2019t even know enough to have an opinion.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Malley\u2019s nomination seems the longest of long shots, but that did not stop two University of Iowa students from spending Friday afternoon walking 12 miles in sub-freezing temperatures, knocking on door after door in Iowa City.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ll be surprised the night of the caucuses,\u201d said Mitchell Dunn, chair of the Hawkeyes for O\u2019Malley at the university, where he is a freshman. \u201cThe pollsters often don\u2019t get to see the momentum for some candidates. We have a great group of supporters, and I think we\u2019ll see a surprise on Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_27423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27423\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/category\/topics\/election2016\/iowa-caucuses\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27423\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/MedillReportsLogo1-300x141.jpg\" alt=\"Campaign 2016\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/MedillReportsLogo1-300x141.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/01\/MedillReportsLogo1.jpg 556w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click here to check out all of Medill Reports&#8217; coverage of the Iowa Caucus and the road to the white house.<\/figcaption><\/figure>David Beech, a sophomore, said that while the media hasn\u2019t helped the Maryland governor grab the spotlight, he believes the former Maryland governor will emerge strongly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the great things about Iowa,&#8221; he said, &#8220;is that you don\u2019t always need media attention to do well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About a dozen University of Iowa students volunteer with Hawkeyes for O\u2019Malley. The key was seeing the mild-mannered candidate in action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cActions, not words. That\u2019s what his campaign is about,\u201d Dunn said. The two teenage political science students, who just came of voting age, view O\u2019Malley as the only Democratic candidate who has enacted progressive reforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has a progressive record of raising the minimum wage, increasing income equality and reforming criminal justice,\u201d said Dunn, who first met O\u2019Malley at a fundraiser in his Mississippi River home town of Davenport, Iowa, last year. \u201cI was wary of committing early, but he spoke and I was, like, &#8216;This is it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dunn and Beech speak of O\u2019Malley\u2019s policies with confidence and command of the political lingo. \u201cHe\u2019s the only candidate who has a plan for 100-percent renewable energy. That\u2019s going to create millions of jobs,\u201d said Dunn. \u201cHe believes in climate change and has a strong position on gun control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Age matters, too. Beech voiced concerns that Sanders, 74, and Clinton, 68, will be too old in eight years to carry on with efficacy what he called \u201cthe hardest job in the world.\u201d At 53, O\u2019Malley is voicing a younger generation\u2019s perspective, Dunn said.<\/p>\n<p>Dunn and Beech drew a comparison between O\u2019Malley and President Barack Obama, who was 47 when he took office\u00a0 in 2009.\u00a0 They said growing up during the Obama presidency sparked their political interest and contributed to their decision to volunteer for O&#8217;Malley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t really know what was going on when Obama became president because I was too little,\u201d said Beech. \u201cBut he\u2019s definitely inspired me. I often watch YouTube videos of his speeches. He\u2019s our generation\u2019s JFK, our Democratic leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Dunn, O\u2019Malley is showing the same genuineness and ability to connect to people that helped make Obama so successful, especially among young voters. This is why the two young \u201cpolitical junkies,\u201d as Dunn and Beech called themselves, committed to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe cares about people,\u201d Dunn said. \u201cHe\u2019s reasonable and personable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a uniter, not a divider,\u201d Beech added.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Malley\u2019s sister Bridget Hunter told Medill Reports that her younger brother is popular among young Americans because \u201che affords everyone an opportunity, and that\u2019s resonating with young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda Klein, a staging coordinator for the O\u2019Malley campaign in Des Moines, said many students took days off from school and flew in from other states on their own nickel to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons\u00a0 I\u2019m doing this is because their enthusiasm is contagious,\u201d she said. \u201cThey care about the future of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Monday night\u2019s caucuses don\u2019t pan out for O\u2019Malley, Dunn and Beech don\u2019t know yet which other Democratic candidate they will turn to. Sanders, according to Beech, is \u201ctoo extreme, too much us-versus-them, the lower class versus the billionaires.\u201d Clinton, for her part, does not look like much of a uniter to him.<\/p>\n<p>For now, Dunn and Beech\u2019s mind is on Monday night, when they\u2019ll both be precinct captains for O\u2019Malley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe caucuses are one of the best parts of our democracy,\u201d Beech said. \u201cYou have a chance to win, even without name recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Governor of Maryland Martin O\u2019Malley takes pictures with young supporters at his campaign office in Des Moines on Caucus Day.
