About 28,000 people will step out Chicago’s freezing winter and into a tropical paradise of 10,000 flowers at the third annual Orchid Show at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the expectation if this year\u2019s show compares with the previous popularity of the crowd-drawing event. And program organizers are presenting special events such as concerts and classes along with the creative floral layouts.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cEach year we try to do something a little different,\u201d said Jodi Zombolo, senior director of visitor events and programs at the Chicago Botanic Garden.<\/p>\n

Orchids belong to one of the largest plant families and account for approximately 30,000 different varieties, making it an optimal selection for a large-scale show.<\/p>\n

\u201cOrchids are some of the most highly advance group of plants on the planet,\u201d said Tom Etheridge, chair of the American Orchid Society Research and Conservation Committee. \u201cThey are still essentially evolving and they are dispersed across the world. So they have developed a huge range of characteristics to attract pollinators that are site specific.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event showcases \u201cA Study in Contrasts,\u201d displaying up to 10,000 orchids in many varieties of size, color and geographical contexts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy all the effort they put into it,\u201d said Frank Turk, a visitor to the show. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful display and especially in the middle of winter it\u2019s nice to be able to come out and see all this.\u201d<\/p>\n

One arrangement, the \u201cVanda Chandelier\u201d drew immediate attention from many visitors. It showcases flowers usually native to India and Burma in vibrant pink and red hues that cascade from the ceiling.<\/p>\n

Nancy Chadwick, a regular at the garden, said she uses the Orchid Show as a chance to buy plants from the sale held following the close of the exhibit, and learn some tips on arranging her own garden.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing the colors and the textures help to learn how to mix things and just to step out of the box a little bit,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Photographers positioned themselves for dramatic views during the opening weekend, some equipped with impressive gear, others just with smartphones. Photographers can enter shots from the show in the garden\u2019s Orchid Show Photo Contest.<\/p>\n

Tod Davison of Chicago\u00a0 took many pictures of the floral beauties, but said he doesn\u2019t plan on entering the competition with his work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just go on Facebook for friends to see,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m just trying to learn a little more about taking pictures indoors with something with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the ongoing exhibit, the garden is unveiling several special events to bring in new types of visitors.<\/p>\n

This Thursday\u2019s \u201cConcert with the Orchids,\u201d is already sold out, with about 55 percent of tickets purchased by non-members, according to Zombolo. The concert will feature The Accidentals, an indie-trio band which Billboard Magazine named one of the top seven breakout artists at SXSW 2015.<\/p>\n

But there are more concerts <\/a>to come as part of the show.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s probably a whole new demographic for us,\u201d Zombolo said. \u201cIt\u2019s an indie band so it\u2019s young, it\u2019s hip, it\u2019s drawing a completely different crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n

The garden will also host two different evening events involving cocktail tasting, and various orchid-themed classes, among other events.<\/p>\n

The Orchid Show is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through March 13. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors 62 and older, or children between the ages of 3 and 12 for all non-members of the garden. Members get a $2 discount on all ticket prices.<\/p>\n

Vandas are native to India and Burma and require tropical light and temperatures to grow, making them very difficult to produce in a greenhouse. They are known for their bright colors and stained glass patterns. \n<\/figcaption><\/figure>
\"Dye-infused<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>
Natural orchids never appear in blue but are actually white or pink and infused with a blue dye. Unknowing amateur gardeners can often be taken in by this common misconception, buying blue orchids only to find them reverting to the original color with the next stem that blooms.\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>
\"Smell<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>
Orchids can range in the intensity of their scents, with some emitting no smell at all. This smelling station was set up for visitors to test out some of the various orchid aromas. \n<\/figcaption><\/figure>
\"Darin's<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/div>
In the 19th Century, Charles Darwin proposed that the Madagascar\u2019s Anagraecum sesquipedale would require a pollinator with a long proboscis (part of its mouth) to pollinate the plant\u2019s 12-to 18-inch-long nectar spur. However, he wasn\u2019t proven correct until a type of moth with the length of proboscis he theorized was discovered 40 years after his death.\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>
