With a networking hour, presentations by trailblazing women, a musical performance and the ChicagonistaLive Talk Show, the Auto Show integrates Women Driving Excellence, a program featuring successful women who inspire\u00a0others to make progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe female market is very important to the auto industry,\u201d said Dave Sloan, president and general manager of the Auto Show. \u201cAuto shows have typically and historically been dominated by males. It\u2019s been a higher share of males attending the shows than women. So for the past quite a few years we are trying to even out that statistic.\u201d <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The women-friendly strategies work well for the Chicago Auto Show. The Show\u2019s website states that women comprised 44 percent of\u00a0people attending\u00a0last year. The Chicago Auto Show has consistently been highest in terms of female attendees, according to Foresight Research, a Michigan market research and consulting firm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo get 40 percent-60 percent women, that is a very, very big deal,\u201d said Mark Bilek, senior director of communications and technology for the Chicago Auto Show. \u201cBut then at the same time Women\u2019s Day has grown from just about helping women understand cars to creating a forum for women in the business community to discuss business issues and automotive issues. \u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29988\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29988 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/2_edited.jpg\" alt=\" Dee Alexander, a song stylist, spoke during the Women\u2019s Day at the Chicago Auto Show.\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/2_edited.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/2_edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/2_edited-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/2_edited-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dee Alexander, a song stylist, spoke during the Women\u2019s Day at the Chicago Auto Show.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Forbes reported in 2014 that women influence 80 percent of car purchase decisions.\u00a0Also in 2014\u00a0Frost &amp; Sullivan, a research and consulting firm,\u00a0determined\u00a0that the number of women with driver\u2019s licenses reached 51 percent, for the first time overtaking men in that respect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo some extent, every day is women\u2019s day at the Auto Show,\u201d said Bilek, \u201cbecause automakers court women so heavily in today\u2019s advertising and marketing, because they understand that women have such an influence in the purchase decision. So it will be silly for a company or an auto show to only target towards men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taria Tuccio, a human resources consultant, chose to attend the Women Driving Excellence presentations before going to the show. She said this is her second year coming to the Auto Show, partly driven by the Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo this is kind of a way to combine the efforts of coming to see the Auto Show and experience different things affecting women in Chicago,\u201d said Tuccio.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute reported that car ownership has a high chance of decreasing in the future with the advancement of driverless cars and the influence of the share economy. The report says that \u201cin the most extreme hypothetical scenario,&#8221; these new trends &#8220;could reduce the\u00a0average ownership rate by 43% (from 2.1 to 1.2 vehicles per household).\u201d Studies also show that men are driving less while women are doing more driving.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29989\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29989 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/4_edited.jpg\" alt=\"4_edited\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/4_edited.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/4_edited-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/4_edited-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/02\/4_edited-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inspecting a car at the Chicago Auto Show.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI probably will have a lot more influence because I drive more,\u201d said Shevawn Hyatt, who was testing a car with her husband. She shares a car with him, and normally she drives the car to work while her husband will take the train \u201cbecause we just have one car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Automakers are working on attracting female customers. They are increasing the number of women car dealers, and training sales people to cater to women car buyers.<\/p>\n<p>David Scumidt, a product specialist at the Auto Show for Hyundai, said since the first day that he got into the auto business three years ago he has received training to recognize the purchasing power of women and to involve women attendees in the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the industry is doing a better job. Is it doing a good job yet? I\u2019m not sure. Everybody defines that differently,\u201d Scumidt said. \u201cIf you want to\u00a0be smart about the way you are marketing and selling your products, you\u2019re going to make sure you include the females in the buying decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Women&#8217;s Day at the Chicago Auto Show.
