Martin Luther King Jr. on Sunday, two messages echoed in the service: the rejection of the sanitization of King\u2019s messages and the uphill battle for racism is far from over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<iframe src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/117821673\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. King is not the homogenized, commodified pin cushion that he sold to us as,\u201d said actor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0502015\/\">Harry Lennix<\/a>, a Chicago native who was invited by the Rev. (Thomas Yau\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lennix\u2019s opinion came at a time when racial tensions in the U.S. reached a critical point amid the police killings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York. (Thomas Yau\/Medill )<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Parishioners who attended the service said that although overt racial segregation such as \u201cwhite only\u201d signs during King\u2019s time had disappeared, racism evolved and became more subtle and institutionalized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it came to looking for housing, the realtors knew that there are certain lines that they called redlining\u2026.You don\u2019t show anybody of color these houses in this area,\u201d parishioner Eric Harwell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think things happening in society continue to remind us of racism being very present,\u201d said Christian Plummer, a law student of Northwestern University. \u201cThe people of color who are in postgraduate studies is very low, in my incoming class there are only five African-Americans in a class of over 250.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pfleger said racism is the root of a lot of social problems and they will not be solved until the society \u201cdismantled\u201d racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#8217;t look back and talk about what he [King] did, look at the mirror and say what you&#8217;re doing\u2026. And if we&#8217;re not doing what he called us to do, then guess what?
