Williamson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">For Fran Joy, art is another way to challenge people\u2019s perspectives on race, gender and inequality.<\/p>\n<p>And the 65-year-old painter had yet another opportunity to display her unique artwork when she curated the \u201cJustice for Peace\u201d exhibition from Jan. 31 until the end of February. One of the objectives was to showcase the works of prominent black artists from the Chicago metropolitan area.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In addition to Joy&#8217;s paintings, many artists\u2019 works were on display at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center in Evanston, Illinois, including painter Jevoid Simmons; David Anthony Geary; Dino Robinson, founder of\u00a0 Shorefront, a non-profit historical organization; and up-and-coming artist Angela Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Joy said that artwork is not only impactful because of its beauty and uniqueness, but its power to reveal truth, which can ultimately change minds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeconds create moments, and moments create reality,\u201d Joy said. \u201cFor example, if there was a moment where you had a chance to make a decision about somebody\u2019s life or death, if you plug into the humanity and the value of life for a couple of seconds, you can make that right decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also noted the death of Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old who was shot and killed by police, as an example of not taking the time to critically evaluate situations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33479\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-33479 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/Hands-Up-2.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Hands Up!&quot;\" width=\"1100\" height=\"2223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/Hands-Up-2.jpg 1100w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/Hands-Up-2-148x300.jpg 148w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/Hands-Up-2-768x1552.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/Hands-Up-2-507x1024.jpg 507w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Hands Up!&#8221; is another portrait by Fran Joy that focuses on social justice and institutionalized racism.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Joy\u2019s artwork and upbringing<\/h2>\n<p>Joy\u2019s painting, \u201cHands Up!,\u201d is a depiction of how black youth are unjustly killed solely based on their appearance. In the painting, a silhouetted figure, who\u2019s clearly a black boy, has his raised above his head. His T-shirt reads \u201cSTOP.\u201d And beneath it is a bull\u2019s-eye marked on his chest.<\/p>\n<p>Joy added that her artwork is meant to challenge the beliefs of privileged individuals, who either don\u2019t believe in institutionalized racism or are oblivious to it. Geary said he\u2019s not on the front lines with protesters, but his work includes social justice themes, and in some ways can be equally powerful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are multiple forms of activism,\u201d Geary said.<\/p>\n<p>While Geary said that there are some African-Americans who fully embrace who they are, it\u2019s not \u201ca fluid process\u201d since there are individuals who aren\u2019t aware of who they are and don\u2019t embrace their culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me [my artwork] is a reclaiming of our humanity and our beauty,\u201d Geary said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: &#8220;Jesus&#8221; was among several works of art by artist Fran Joy, which was on display throughout the month of February at the &#8220;Justice for Peace&#8221; exhibition.
