(Airbus Group NV, Boeing CO., Ezra Kaplan\/Medill)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cLast year was a real paradox,\u201d said Joseph Schwieterman, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/las.depaul.edu\/centers-and-institutes\/chaddick-institute-for-metropolitan-development\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Chaddick Institute\u00a0for Metropolitan Development<\/a> &amp;\u00a0Professor of Transportation at DePaul University. \u201cStrong airplane sales with bad profits, and they\u2019re taking it on the chin in the stock markets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.airbus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Airbus Group NV<\/a>, registered in the Netherlands and headquartered in France, and Seattle based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boeing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boeing Co.<\/a> announced their record-breaking years early in January. Boeing reported 723 planes delivered while Airbus produced 629.<\/p>\n<p>As Boeing continues to dominate the aviation industry, investors have taken notice. After two years of steadily climbing stock, Airbus saw its stock value plummet by 30 percent over the past year.<\/p>\n<p>While Airbus claims to be the \u201cworld\u2019s leading aircraft manufacturer of passenger airliners, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats,\u201d it has struggled to break into the smaller regional jet market.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneously, the large size aircraft that Airbus is well known for just hasn\u2019t been as economically successful as the company had hopped.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-352\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/justus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/01\/Wide-Body-Interior.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-352 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/justus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/01\/Wide-Body-Interior.jpg\" alt=\"The interior of Airbus\u2019 A350X wide body airplane. (Airbus Group NV)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey are getting squeezed on both ends,\u201d Schwieterman said. \u201cThe big planes aren\u2019t making as much money as they had hoped and the smaller planes aren\u2019t selling the way they would like, and that\u2019s where the cash is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schwieterman added that Airbus hasn\u2019t been particularly successful in the military business\u2013 an area where its top competitor has thrived.<\/p>\n<p>This is the third year in a row that Boeing won out over Airbus while simultaneously setting yearly industry records.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_351\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-351\" style=\"width: 1100px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/justus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/01\/Narrow-Body-Aircraft.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-351 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/justus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/01\/Narrow-Body-Aircraft.jpg\" alt=\"The interior of Boeing\u2019s 373-900ER. (Boeing Co.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;What the Boeing team achieved in 2014 is truly unprecedented, especially in the face of fierce competition,&#8221; said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.boeing.com\/boeing\/companyoffices\/aboutus\/execprofiles\/conner.page\" target=\"_blank\">Ray Conner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conner saw his company\u2019s stock rise over 2013 and over the past year has been relatively devoid of volatility.<\/p>\n<p>Both companies have a common enemy potentially resting on the horizon. Lower fuel prices will take away some of the motivation to modernize aging, fuel-guzzling fleets.
