(Colin Mo\/MEDILL)<\/div>\n<p>Yik Yak is a platform that allows users to post anonymously about anything and everything, and the posts are accessible to everyone in the area. Users who choose to take their conversations out of the public eye will leave usernames for other applications, such as Kik, Snapchat, or WeChat. The obscure usernames that are left for \u201chook-ups\u201d guarantee a form of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-38129\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_16591-576x1024.png\" alt=\"IMG_1659[1]\" width=\"474\" height=\"843\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_16591-576x1024.png 576w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_16591-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_16591.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">When users want to take it private, they leave other anonymous usernames for direct messaging apps like Snapchat.(Colin Mo\/MEDILL)<\/div>\n<p>Philip Crean, the Secretary-General and Chief Executive Officer of MUNUC, said that the organization had been aware of Yik Yak and other mobile platforms since last year\u2019s conference, and had staff members monitoring the platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year, we reached out to Yik Yak representatives on campus, and asked them to shut it down at the site within the conference\u2019s downtown location, but ultimately it turned out that shutting it down in the Chicago Loop for a weekend was impossible,\u201d said Crean.<\/p>\n<p>Crean added that there had been \u201cno cause for intervention\u201d at this year\u2019s conference, and that \u201cif any of the supervisors found something uncomfortable on Yik Yak during the program, advisers would have been alerted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-39027\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_1706-2.png\" alt=\"IMG_1706 (2)\" width=\"750\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_1706-2.png 750w, https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/IMG_1706-2-300x149.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Some students yakked that they opted to get alcohol directly from room service. (Colin Mo\/MEDILL)<\/div>\n<p>Olivia Boger, a spokesperson for Yik Yak responded in an email, \u201cWe encourage users to take an active role in keeping their feed healthy, fun, and respectful. One powerful way to do this is by upvoting awesome content or downvoting content that\u2019s not appropriate within your community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boger also indicated that five downvotes triggers automatic removal of the posts. \u201cIf you come across a concerning yak we\u2019ve also made it easy for you to report it: just tap the flag icon at the top of the yak and select the reason for the report,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.yikyak.com\/blog\/making-the-world-feel-small-again\" target=\"_blank\">Yik Yak\u2019s web statement from 24-year-old CEO Tyler Droll notes<\/a>: \u201cBeing able to speak openly within your community is powerful and beneficial, too. On Yik Yak we can have open and honest conversations on topics that we might not even talk about with our closest friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/09\/technology\/popular-yik-yak-app-confers-anonymity-and-delivers-abuse.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Yik Yak has caught a lot of attention in the past<\/a>, for their service of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-intersect\/wp\/2015\/03\/11\/what-the-infamous-college-chat-app-yik-yak-looks-like-at-the-university-of-oklahoma-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\">providing anonymous public space<\/a>. (Colin Mo\/MEDILL)<\/div>\n<p>Darren Sombke and Jung-Ah Sombke, chaperones from Rockford Lutherian High School, said, \u201cYou can\u2019t prevent bad things from happening. It sucks that this happens, and I wish we could supervise everything about these kids but there\u2019s a level of trust that has to be given.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents wouldn\u2019t allow their kids to go if they didn\u2019t believe that the chaperones would be there, and that the supervision is adequate,\u201d said Darren Sombke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe trust them not to be stupid,\u201d added Jung-Ah Sombke. \u201cWe know them, we know these kids we\u2019re in charge of, we\u2019ve watched them here and in school. We give them the benefit of the doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As technology advances and another generation of supervisors<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/04\/150429100917.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> struggles to keep up<\/a>, organizations in charge of teenagers may have a vested but conflicting interest to protect adolescents without losing their sense of trust.<\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Model United Nations of University of Chicago committee meeting.
