{"id":38318,"date":"2016-03-16T10:24:06","date_gmt":"2016-03-16T15:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/?p=38318"},"modified":"2016-03-16T10:24:06","modified_gmt":"2016-03-16T15:24:06","slug":"millennials-ambition-tops-loyalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/millennials-ambition-tops-loyalty\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennials&#8217; ambition tops loyalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><strong>By Steven Porter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Andrew Jachna switched jobs this month, less than a year after he finished college. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The 23-year-old real estate analyst didn\u2019t hesitate when he spotted an opportunity with another company he felt could keep his career moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That mentality places him in good company for his age bracket. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">One in four college-educated workers who were born after 1983 and have full-time jobs would leave their current employers during the next year if given the choice, and about two-thirds of them expect to leave within five years, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/pages\/about-deloitte\/articles\/gx-millennials-one-foot-out-the-door.html#report\"><span class=\"s2\">the 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Among the many reasons for this high turnover, millennials are oftentimes motivated by their ambition to challenge themselves and pursue leadership roles, the survey found.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38320\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38320 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/millennial-employment-1-e1458134804805.png\" alt=\"Millennial employment\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/millennial-employment-1-e1458134804805.png 800w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/millennial-employment-1-e1458134804805-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/medill.wordpress.offload\/WP%20Media%20Folder%20-%20medill-reports-chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/03\/millennial-employment-1-e1458134804805-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About two-thirds of college-educated millennials with full-time jobs expect to switch employers within five years, according to the 2016 Deloitte Millennial Survey. (Steven Porter\/MEDILL)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Jachna, who is now an underwriting analyst with Freddie Mac in Chicago, said he hopes this new workplace culture proves to be \u201can open and collaborative environment\u201d in which he\u2019s free to ask questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe opportunity to learn is something that\u2019s really important to me,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s just kind of the stage in my career when I need to be a sponge and absorb as much information as I can to develop and take on more responsibility.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A workload that\u2019s too simple or too easy would undermine his sense of accomplishment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think what would make me most happy is enjoying my work and feeling that it\u2019s interesting and challenging,\u201d Jachna said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Libby Rapin, whose title is \u201cdirector of people and culture\u201d for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highground.com\/\"><span class=\"s2\">HighGround Inc.<\/span><\/a> \u2014 a human resources software company that aims to facilitate continuous feedback (as an alternative to formal reviews conducted at regular intervals) \u2014 said millennials often rank compensation as the most important factor in assessing whether to take a job offer. After that, they often consider things like work-life balance and advancement opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cMore than anything, people just want to feel like they\u2019re developed,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rapin and Diamond Greer, a Chicago-based human resources analyst who works in the financial sector, offered advice on hiring and managing millennials to about a dozen fellow HR professionals during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/hiring-and-managing-excellent-millennials-tickets-20861905521\"><span class=\"s2\">a recent event at Coalition: Impact<\/span><\/a>, a co-working studio and events space in River North.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Greer said it\u2019s important, in order to foster loyalty among millennial workers, to avoid describing their work as merely doing \u201ca job.\u201d Instead, employers should talk about the \u201ccareer trajectory\u201d of individual employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHow can you take what they\u2019re really good at, their strengths, and have that be valuable for your business?\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This approach can help managers refine their expectations, which may differ from one employee to the next, depending upon experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Are you looking for readiness or are you looking for potential? They&#8217;re two different things,\u201d Greer said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rapin said workplace accountability mechanisms will always be necessary, but she dismissed notions that millennials \u2014 who last year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2015\/05\/11\/millennials-surpass-gen-xers-as-the-largest-generation-in-u-s-labor-force\/\"><span class=\"s2\">became the largest generation in the American workforce<\/span><\/a>, according to Pew Research Center \u2014 are \u201chigh-maintenance\u201d for expecting their workplaces to meet their needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think the modern workforce is just going to be changing in general,\u201d Rapin said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"featurecaption\">Photo at top: Libby Rapin, director of people and culture for HighGround Inc., a human resources software company, offers advice to a fellow HR professional Feb. 26.
