Ellis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dropcap\">In the age of #SayHerName and #BlackLivesMatter social justice movements, black women have played a key role in protesting injustice across the country. Dedicated to changing the U.S. political and racial climate, they have demanded their voices be heard, while demanding change.<\/p>\n<p>However, black women have been noticeably absent from many\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/06\/06\/race-and-feminism-movement-_n_5459195.html\" target=\"_blank\">conversations<\/a> surrounding feminism and civil rights. This sense of absenteeism is called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/07\/magazine\/the-painful-consequences-of-erasure.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cerasure,\u201d<\/a> referring to a group of people whose lived experiences are ignored by society and unaddressed by social policy. Even in historic social justice movements, black women have fought for acknowledgment: During 1960s civil rights movement and women\u2019s movement of the \u201970s, their voices were often muted in favor of black male voices or white women\u2019s needs. For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theroot.com\/articles\/politics\/2010\/05\/dorothy_height_and_the_sexism_of_the_civil_rights_movement.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dorothy Height<\/a>, of the National Council of Negro Women, was not allowed to speak at the 1963 March on Washington, though she did share the podium with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.<br \/>\n[vimeo 159274137 w=474]<br \/>\n<!--more-->\u00a0\u201cIf you look historically or even today, most of the well-known spokespersons for most activist groups are men,\u201d said Ariana Johnson, a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago. \u201cEven if the group wasn\u2019t started by men, it\u2019s usually men who are seen as the leaders. I definitely think that women\u2019s voices aren\u2019t heard as much just because we\u2019re not seen as aggressive or as able to do our job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"quoteright\">\u201cSome obstacles that I face being a black woman and being an activist is people just not really taking you serious. You\u2019re kind of stereotyped. Young. Black. You&#8217;re probably out here not really doing nothing with yourself.\u201d <em>\u2014 Ebony Hagler, canvasser, The People\u2019s Lobby<\/em><\/div>\n<p>In the quest for justice for black male victims of police brutality, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2014\/08\/13\/us\/ferguson-missouri-town-under-siege-after-police-shooting.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Brown<\/a> in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York, feminist activists have noticed black women in similar situations have been ignored in this public conversation. This spawned the #SayHerName hashtag, to call attention to the stories of women like Chicago\u2019s Rekia Boyd, shot and killed in 2012 by an off-duty Chicago police officer.<\/p>\n<p>In Chicago, where a collective of activists have mounted days and weeks of protests against <a href=\"http:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/foxx-defeats-alvarez-for-sa-nomination-clinton-and-trump-win-big-in-presidential-race\/\" target=\"_blank\">outgoing <\/a>State\u2019s Attorney Anita Alvarez and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, black women have played a critical role in organizing and messaging. And, in fact, Black Lives Matter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/black-lives-matter-opal-tometi_us_560c1c59e4b0768127003227\" target=\"_blank\">was founded<\/a> by women who were determined to uplift unheard voices within the black community, such as women and LGBT people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome obstacles that I face being a black woman and being an activist is people just not really taking you serious,\u201d said Ebony Hagler, a canvasser with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepeopleslobbyusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The People\u2019s Lobby<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019re kind of stereotyped.
